Amanda Eller survives 17 days in Makawao forest by drinking stream water, eating strawberry guava

‘Miracles do happen,” said Julia Eller, mother of Amanda Eller, the 35-year-old yoga instructor and physical therapist who was found alive Friday after surviving 17 days in the rugged forest above Makawao.

During an emotional news conference at Maui Memorial Medical Center, where the younger woman was being treated for a broken lower leg and infection due to severe sunburn on her lower extremities, Eller’s mother recounted how her daughter survived by eating strawberry guava fruit and drinking stream water.

Eller got lost May 8 while hiking within the Makawao Forest Reserve, an expansive wilderness area with areas of dense forest, steep ascents and rugged terrain. In an interview with the New York Times, Eller said she lost her way after briefly leaving the trail and spent the rest of the day and night traveling in the wrong direction trying to make it back to her car.

Eller said that at times she felt like giving up, “but the only option I had was life or death.”

Strawberry Guava and stream water?

Sounds like it could have been worse. Why didn’t she have a GPS?

She has God to thank. Didn’t see Him mentioned in the article except at “I was like, Oh my God...” Probably a lib. Yoga, hiking, no belief system.

I have a friend whose son went hiking alone there after graduating high school. It was a present from his dad, a week in Hawaii.
He never found his body. They searched for months. The father quit working and looked and looked.
The theory was he walked up on some pot growers and got murdered.

“Probably a lib. Yoga, hiking, no belief system.”

So, if you practice Yoga and hike you have no belief system?

Me, too. In the early ‘70s, in Waimea Canyon. Never found his body, either. Most likely stumbled on to pakalolo cash crop.

She couldn’t find a rainbow with granola and yogurt at the end to compliment the fruits?

Compass - not even a compass?

“No, I have GPS on the phone” ... but she left it in the car.

Doh!!

(Also, don’t some smartphones have a compass?)

#4: "he walked up on some pot growers and got murdered."

No. That can't be! I've been told by losertarians that marijuana is a victimless crime.

It seems that she had the sun and the creeks. If she follows a creek eventually it will cross a road or open onto a beach or river. Water is always going to take the quickest path downhill.

Hawaii streams , on the volcanoes , go thru an endless series of waterfalls and drops . Some tens of feet , some hundreds . They are spectacular ( from the air ) but nearly impossible to follow down otherwise and that is exactly what happened to her; she was on such a stream and came t an impossible drop , which had she attempted , she would have died . She had already fractured her tibia attempting to climb down a smaller fall . She found good water and an open stream bed and held up for rescue . Good call . Had it rained hard that stream gulch would have flash flooded and she would have been done for . High water can come up in a very short time here in Hawaii . I have a fair amount of backcountry wilderness experience here myself .

I think her broken leg put a crimp in that plan.

This. I never leave my phone. I have turned it off when I didn’t want to be bothered. I can keep my hands off my phone though. I’ve noticed a lot of people can’t. Went to Hawaii with a friend recently and on the plane on the way back she kept checking her phone and her Fitbit. I said wth? We have no service. She was reading old emails. Just couldn’t keep her hands off her phone. Mine was in my bag on silent.
