SpaceX Rockets Were Imperiled by Falsified Reports: Engineer accused of forging signatures

Elon Musk’s space venture last year discovered that an employee at one of its contractors falsified product-quality reports for components intended for its rockets, generating concerns among officials at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, according to federal investigators.

The complaint, filed in federal court on Tuesday, accuses engineer James Smalley with falsifying reports and parts certifications at his former company, PMI Industries LLC. Rochester, N.Y.-based PMI Industries provided precision machining services for parts used to build space flight vehicles for Mr. Musk’s closely held Space Exploration Technologies Corp., or SpaceX.

NASA, the Air Force and other federal agencies have contracted to use SpaceX rockets for a range of missions. Mr. Smalley was accused of falsifying inspectors’ signatures on at least 38 reports on parts for the company’s Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets.

Efforts to reach Mr. Smalley, 41 years old, were unsuccessful. His attorney didn’t immediately return a call. Mr. Smalley was scheduled to make an appearance Thursday afternoon before a federal judge in Rochester.

According to the government, Mr. Smalley acted alone to falsify the inspection reports. In an interview with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Mr. Smalley estimated that he forged signatures on reports about 15 to 30 times, and falsified perhaps one or two certifications, said an affidavit from an agent with NASA’s office of inspector general.

One guy?

No one checks or verifies tests that could endanger the entire mission?

The company fires employees who raise safety concerns but keeps shitheads like this onboard until they are exposed.

That guy should go into the lockup as soon as he appears before the judge.

He’s already admitted his acts, and he is most certainly a flight risk.

His future here is toast.

Unfortunately it happens a lot with NASA contractors. NASA lost 2 satellites due to shoddy work. This went on for 20 years

With a face (and attitude, etc) like that, I don’t think I’ll be buying one of his cars.

Less than a year has passed since he touched the third rail. And now the psycho social justice lynch mob is after him. This time last year he sent that red convertible to Mars and was golden.

Then in the Thai cave rescue he dared point out a British homo pedophile. Weeks later the SEC came after him, the money world turned against him, the governmental world turned against him, NASA despises him, etc.

You can do anything in this world except point out a Brit boy lover man. That hits too close to home to half out Government, pizzagate, Hillary and her Podesta pedophile friends. Perverts run the governments of the world.

And this couldn’t have anything to do with Boeing and the way they have screwed up and cost overrun the SLS could it?
When we read a story, we should also ask, who PUT the story in the news and why?

Everything is there for a reason. And it ain’t to “inform” us.

After the Challenger explosion, if I'm remembering correctly, they tried throwing the engineers under the bus, until some of those pesky reports and memos showed up.
If this Smalley was a competant and honest engineer, the truth (like in the Challenger incident) would be on the record somewhere. If not, the guy deserves what is coming.

Thanks fieldmarshaldj. The subcontractor is probably finished in business, and whatever parts they're making will be brought in-house -- the very process that caused SpaceX to start designing and building its own rockets in the first place.

‘Then in the Thai cave rescue he dared point out a British homo pedophile.’

Did Musk ever provide any evidence to support that claim, as it’s one heck of a thing to say about a guy - but then the guy is British...
