AOC confronts drug company CEO over prices, then promotes universal health care

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., attempted to make a case for universal health care on Thursday after a tense confrontation over the HIV prevention drug known as PrEP.

During a congressional hearing, Ocasio-Cortez pressed Gilead Sciences CEO Daniel O'Day on why his company's drug -- Truvada for PrEP -- cost so much more in the United States than in Australia. She later answered her own question on Twitter, saying that the U.S. health care system was to blame.

"Spoiler: Because Australia has universal health care," she tweeted. During the hearing, O'Day responded to Ocasio-Cortez by noting how the drug was under patent in the United States but would be generically available in September of 2020

Ocasio-Cortez, who pointed out Gilead's $3 billion in revenue from the drug, then suggested that people died as a result of the company's pricing.

"There is no reason this should be $2,000 a month," she said of the drug, which is used to prevent HIV infections. "People are dying because of it and there's no forcible reason for it. We own the core intellectual property for it and, as a result, people are dying for no reason."

I think we should have an Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez drinking game. Everytime she says or tweets something unutterably ignorant, *drink*.

Or, contrariwise, if we don’t want to encourage drunkenness among the FReeple, we could *drink* when she says something that makes sense. I seem to remember that happened once.

”People are dying because of it and there's no forcible reason for it.”

No, people are dying because of their own foolish actions. Crying because you can’t afford a drug that has been developed to prevent the consequences of your foolish actions from affecting you seems an awful lot like complaining that people who jump off cliffs without parachutes are dying because the parachutes are too expensive.

Don’t jump off the cliff in the first place!

Under the PBS, the (Australian) government subsidises the cost of medicine for most medical conditions.

So the Australian taxpayers pay the extra cost.

Get ready for a lot more of this.

Drug company executives make great political whipping boys. The great unwashed out there don’t invest too much thought in thinking through all of the issues. They just see the price tag and become outraged.

Hell, Trump is likely to join in on this.
He’s no big fan of theirs either.

“We own the core intellectual property for it”

WE? If these companies are not allowed R&D investment there won’t be any of these drugs. Of course if we were a communist country we would not have these problems as far as AOC is concerned.

I don’t think she’s ever said anything intelligent in her life. She is a one-woman bimbo eruption (remember when Bill and Hillary could call women who accused him of groping and worse, such names? Before MeToo said that the accusing women are *always* to be believed, no matter the lack of evidence?)

Kind of like when the sodomites said that they only wanted government out of their bedrooms, when all the time they were planning on forced support (shades of Mao’s cultural revolution, only even he wasn’t so depraved as to force his people to celebrate perversion).

... we could *drink* when she says something that makes sense.

That'll put a drunk well past needing AA if that rule is followed!

AOC could single-handedly end alcoholism if we all played that.

“Drug company executives make great political whipping boys.”

And they love it.

Socialized medicine means they sell more of their drug, have a non-competitive market so prices are set by fist and if the drug is a dog, people have no other choice.

I don’t think she’s ever said anything intelligent in her life.

I didn't say "intelligent." I said "made sense," as in "not wrong."

I don't remember what it was, but I remember it happened, because it was such a surprise.

Lady, using a $2,000 a month drug to allow needle reuse and unsafe sex is something that should be disincentivized in every way possible.

Gilead is a wonderful company!

For AOC, you could substitute a whole array of Democrat politicians. If you picked someone local, you might catch a report of their saying, “Today is Thursday,” or something like that, and get an additional opportunity to *drink*.
