The seriously part is where the writer notes that sneakers are NOT subject to tariffs. The whole stupid thing is a What If? game.

When I was in high school and college, I worked at a sporting goods shop and got everything at cost so of course I wore some high end sneakers, of course, back then $50 was real high end.

I did get a little spoiled because the better shoes fit better. Once I got married and had kids, my standards went down considerably to the point where I barely care.

That said, I have far more pairs of shoes than my wife does. One pair of dress shoes, one pair of sneakers, hiking boots, work boots, rubber boots, hiking shoes, cycling shoes, mountain bike shoes, winter boots, arctic winter boots and an old pair of black sneakers I wear at trade shows.

No choice. China needs to be brought to heel if possible. The globalists let this go on for decades.

Maybe this will revamp the shoe industry in America. The North East is full of old shoeshop factories that could stand updating and polishing to revive the industry again. It would be nice to have comfortable, well fitting footware in the right sizes for american feet. Chinese shoes are horrid at any price, and Nike’s are among the worst.

Start the tariffs - and then triple them.

We know how to make sneakers here.

Back in the fifties and sixties I wore cheap sneakers made in the United States made by Converse. They still make sneakers but from China. Sneakers were cheap in the past. They are no longer so. You are paying for a mystic associated with sport heros. It is stupid to pay 200 dollars for something that takes just a few dollars to manufacture.

[Here’s a thought, how about parents buy affordable sneakers not manufactured in China for a few bucks a piece, but marked up by Nike to pay Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods and other athletes tens of millions of dollars per year to use their likenesses.]

I don’t understand where you get the idea that their sneakers only cost a few bucks apiece. If that were the case, Walmart would be selling identical quality sneakers for $15, putting Nike out of business.

* I’m a store brand sneaker buyer myself when I see these things on clearance at Walmart for around $10. Store brand sneakers have seen leaps and bounds in quality improvements since the 80’s, and they’re all superior in comfort to Nikes or Reeboks once I insert a pair of (formerly USA-made) Spenco insoles. But without my favorite insoles, store brands are not in the same league as Nikes or Reeboks, comfort wise.

Give me a break! Those made-in-China sneakers require a small percentage of their cost to the consumer to manufacture. The endorsers and the name brands are raking in incredible profits. The idea that tariffs would raise the price on over-priced footwear is crazy. The manufacturers will charge whatever people are stupid enough to pay.

Meanwhile, it's been said we couldn't even produce our own boots to go to war. Bringing those jobs home and having people relearn those skills would be excellent.

Forgot to add. I do buy Dr. Scholls footwear. They are made in China and are of high quality. I pay about 20 bucks for such. I would have absolutely no problem with paying a few dollars more for the same if made in the United States. I would actually prefer this.

Claim is nonsense. The royalties paid to endorsing atheletes is 400% of the manufacturing cost.

footwear distributors etal actually used starbucks coffee as a comparison?

Walmart has shoes - 3-19 bucks, and, like their off-brand t-shirts, wear a few times and toss. But $60 shoes, now, those aren’t going to get tossed. Those are going to get worn to the limit of wearing or they’ll end up in the Goodwill bin. Meaning less discarded cheap shoes in landfills and more ‘good’ shoes available for Goodwill shoppers. So what’s to panic about?

There is an actual shoe repair shop near where I live.
I can’t imagine how they’ve stayed in business for years.

I don’t understand the appeal of sneakers and why so many grown men and women wear them. Aside from the gym and maybe jogging down the street or shooting some hoops, I always considered sneakers a rather sloppy and “down market” look. They aren’t even that comfortable to wear.
