Senate Republicans feel that President Trump has once again pulled the rug out from under them on trade, leaving GOP lawmakers frustrated over their inability to influence the White House’s policy on an issue that could have major economic and electoral ramifications.

Days after a group of Republican senators relayed to Trump at a White House meeting their concerns about trade tensions with Canada, Mexico, Europe and China, Trump over the weekend threatened new tariffs on China, escalating a fight with Beijing and rattling markets.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said after the stock markets closed Monday that higher tariffs on China will take effect Friday, shortly after negotiations with a trade delegation from China are due to resume later this week. Lighthizer’s remarks are likely to rattle markets after they recovered most of their losses Monday afternoon as Wall Street strategists cautioned that Trump’s tough talk is a negotiating tactic and a deal with China is still possible.

I saw Pillsbury, a noted authority on trade policy with China from the Hudson Institute, saying that the Chinese reneged on agreed-upon trade reform that had been done in writing.

The president was thus left with no choice but to increase tariffs or collapse entirely and give the game over to the Chinese to continue hollowing out America.

Is it not unreasonable to suspect that the Chinese calculated that by reneging on their prior written agreements, the reaction by Republican senators would weaken Trump?

It seems to me we have only one president at a time, you cannot negotiate by committee, certainly not a committee of politicians. There is a great line from The Caine Mutiny in which Barney Greenwald rebukes the mutineers saying words to the effect, "he is your captain and you support him or you're no good."

The attempt at renegotiating previously agreed upon conditions is a well known tactic. This is used by the weaker side and only when the opponent (USA) has come to believe they have won and will get a good deal.

The idea is that we are so anxious to finally seal the deal that rather than take the chance of losing all the gains they have made they will give up a few of these wins to get it done.

Trump as a businessman and a successful negotiator is well aware of what the Chinese are doing here and has called their bluff and raised them. He will win this round and my guess is the talks now are in the final stages of an agreement.

On one of the Fox shows last night, a guest (name I don’t remember), said the lead Chinese negotiator was NOT one of the government hard-liners, and put language in the agreement that the hard-liners didn’t like. So Trump retaliated with his own hard line, which the Commie hardliners did NOT expect, and will NOT like.

Sounds like things could get very interesting!

Aside from approving Trump’s Judicial Appointments, the US Senate “Repubicans” are about as “useful as tits on a bull!” And if it were not for that Constitutional necessity, I’d vote to close the Senate permanently. At least in the House we have the opportunity to remove and replace people every 24 months!
