I would additionally recommend the following books on Islam by Bernard Lewis.

• The Middle East-A Brief History
  
  
• The Crisis of Islam
  
  
• What Went Wrong

I have found these books to be rational, informative, and very readable. I highly recommend them.

They are scholastic level books written by a man who was accepted (he died a year or two ago) as the foremost authority on Islam in the West, and his books have been criticized by muslims and non-muslims, but have also been accepted by both sides as the best to be hoped for.

If I had to recommend only one, I would recommend What Went Wrong, as it conveys why Islam is why it is today.
