The hero UNC Charlotte student who died after jumping on a gunman when he opened fire in his classroom will be buried with full military honors.

Riley Howell, 21, was one of two students who died in the shooting at the university's campus on Tuesday. Ellis Parlier, 19, also lost his life.

When gunman Trystan Terrell burst into their anthropology class and opened fire, Howell ran towards him and tackled him to the ground.

Officials in North Carolina say it bought police time to get to him and stop the shooting which saved countless lives.

Wells Funeral Homes in Waynesville told FOX 46 that Riley Howell would receive a military burial in his hometown.

At a time when the word "hero" is tossed around like popcorn, this young man is the correct definition of a hero.

No greater act than to lay down ones life for a friend. This is the second time in a week that has happened. Like the shooting at the Poway synagogue. It’s an example that good ALWAYS overcomes evil.

He was a hero no doubt but full military honors? I had to click the link to see that he was in ROTC.

That explains it.

when seconds count...Just think if there had been a classmate with a concealed carry license and a pistol in class.

This guy’s response is the ONLY defense in “gun free zones”. Maybe it should be taught in every high school and college. If enough people jump the maniac lives will be saved.

Not to detract from Riley Howell, simply to point out.

His courage is driven by his love for his friends.
A selfless act of love.

“The life of the dead is placed on the memories of the living. The love you gave in life keeps people alive beyond their time. Anyone who was given love will always live on in another’s heart.” Marcus Tullius Cicero

Nope...that was my way of saying "exceptional courage". Kinda like the quote by the General/Admiral after one of the Pacific Island victories of the Marines during WWII.In summing up the battle he said that for his Marines "exceptional courage was a common commodity".

Exactly so. In an age of participation trophies and ersatz heroes, this one clamors for a name above hero. Or a return to the original definition. Too bad superhero is already taken.

This is how Democrats plan to win future elections: kill white people and restore the right to vote to murderers.

My mom gets plants & flowers from a place called B B Barnes(I go w/ her when I visit in the summer). He worked there during summers & she said they were interviewed & they had great memories. He would throw big bags of dirt over his shoulder, was a hard worker & everyone just loved him.

You’re correct, he is a true hero.

I had a hunch he might have been ROTC or a prior.

True HERO at a time when the term has been diluted? Absolutely!

And, something I learned at a seminar some years ago, shooters are cowards, and try to set up a buffer zone between them and the intended victims. The best way to defeat the shooter can sometimes be to rush like a linebacker; however, this makes the onrusher the new target.
