Venezuelan opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez said president Nicolas Maduro's generals are willing to defect from his regime imminently, as Spain vowed to protect the politician.
Speaking from the gates of the Spanish ambassador's residence in Caracas, the Venezuelan capital, on Friday Mr Lopez said: "It's a crack that will become a bigger crack... that will end up breaking the dam".
Mr Lopez said he had spoken with senior members of the military who supported the end of Mr Maduro's socialist government amid a failing economy and nationwide blackouts.
Spain has refused to hand Mr Lopez, a leading figure in the country's opposition movement, over to Venezuelan authorities, saying "Spain trusts that the Venezuelan authorities will respect the inviolability of the Spanish Ambassador's residence."
The politician had been under house arrest for months but escaped to appear alongside his successor in the movement, Juan Guaido, on Tuesday as they called for a military uprising aimed at toppling Mr Maduro.

My guess was that was part of Trump’’s telecon with Putin today. Letting him know that whatever is planned won’t directly involve any Russians that are there, but at the same time telling him it would be a good idea to pull out his people and any aircraft that may be on the ground there at the moment. As the Ukraine is to us, so too is Venezuela to Russia. That is to say, for the Russians, Venezuela is an indefensible place for them to try to be.
Sure, we’ve done such a great job with Afghanistan and Iraq.
Trump ran on an end to nation building. Let’s hope he keeps that promise.

Trump’s idea of “nation building” is simply allowing economic forces to function. Maduro is thwarting that process in Venezuela. And it should be noted that unlike most of the $hithole countries in the Middle East, Venezuela was a democracy before they decided to elect Chavez. The only long-term thing Trump has to do is to make sure the Chinko/Ruskie Cabal is kicked out of our hemisphere. And he knows how to do that via economics and not guns. Russia has a $hit economy the size of Lichtenstein’s at present, and the Chinese economy teeters because we are their largest customer and we’re not happy with they deals we’re getting.
Maybe you don’t know that Maduro’s opposition is also a socialist.
So, maybe Venezuela doesn’t have socialism out of their system yet.
I can see the US invading Venezuela spending blood and treasure to give its people freedom only to have them reinstall a socialist government so that they can have another shot at socialist utopia.
You can’t force freedom on a people that want only to be taken care of.
it’d be a start if the military opened up the arsenals and trained a few Vene’s to aim. But are the citizens ready to fight for their country or are they like so many that just want to observe others doing it for them?
There is a great question and answer thing by Nixon on youtube. Some student asked Nixon about him being too chummy with the Soviets with all of the Detente stuff.
Nixon gave an answer something along the lines of “It is good that enemies know each other well. When the Soviets sent troops into Syria to square off against Israel, he (Breznev??) told me that we would have to send troops to Israel.
“No - I don’t think it would be a good idea to put our troops so close to yours. Just one litte error and it might touch something off. And if you attack Israel, I don’t want our troops anywhere near when we respond.”
Now - Breznev - he knew me. Others might have thought I was bluffing. But Breznev - he withdrew his troops and we avoided a conflict.
