Venezuela’s Maduro was preparing to flee to Cuba but was stopped by Russia, Pompeo says

enezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro was prepared to leave the country Tuesday and seek asylum in Cuba but was stopped by Russia, U.S. officials said.

“We’ve watched throughout the day, it’s been a long time since anyone’s seen Maduro,” Pompeo told CNN. “He had an airplane on the tarmac, he was ready to leave this morning as we understand it and the Russians indicated he should stay.”

Pompeo said Maduro had been planning to travel to Havana.

Asked if Maduro would have been allowed to safely depart for Cuba, Pompeo dodged the question.

“Mr. Maduro understands what will happen if he gets on that airplane. … He knows our expectations,” he said.

Maduro hasn’t made a public appearance since his rival, interim President Juan Guaidó, called on Venezuelans early Tuesday to take to the streets and oust the 57-year-old leader.

Venezuela and Cuba have been staunch allies, and the U.S. has accused the communist island of propping up Maduro.

I still don’t understand why we let Americans go to Cuba to give them greenbacks.

There are lots of freedom loving Cubans here that help their families stuck in Cuba. The money is minuscule in the large picture.............

True...but for Cuba it’s their number one source of revenue.

Point #1 - Mueller Report published

Point #2 - Venezuela in rebellion

Point #3 - Coup participants prepping for their walk-of-infamy

This is Benghazi Redux.

Couldn’t we just intercept these phonecalls, and have our own fake Russian general calling up Maduro, telling the plane will be there in two hours, and just board...then take the guy to some jungle airport in Brazil and dump him on the tarmac?

BS from Pompeo. Why does anyone believe this guy? He’s a neocon shill like Bolton. Are we still blaming the Russians for everything? Why would Maduro listen to the Russians if he thought his time was up? Trump has a habit of making bad choices for his administration, and Pompeo and Bolton are 2 of the worst.

Remember, part of Trump’s appeal and his campaign promises included getting the US out of futile wars around the world. Instead, we have troops in more places than ever including the dangerous s**thole Africa; we are still bogged down in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria; we keep moving troops and equipment ever closer to Russia to pimp with them; and now we want to do regime change in Venezuela. Meanwhile, we are bringing in more Muslims and letting them take over some cities and towns, and we have on ongoing invasion on our southern border.

Why aren’t South American countries dealing with Venezuela?

Gotta love it when the Secretary of State is a former CIA Director.

Screw Venezuela. Let it go up in flames. Why do we care? It’s not a threat to the US.

I’m tired of butting in when it’s none of our business. If it becomes a risk to the US, then we go in and level the place, full on. No holds barred. Until then, this is yet another civil war.

So, what's your point -- that we should risk war for it?

I’m smart enough to know we don’t need another war, nor do we need more “refugees” coming into our country.

Who mentioned war?

I asked for a clarification of your point. Is going to war for Venezuelan oil central to that point?

Since Nicolás Maduro turned down the logical option of comfortable exile in Cuba, he is now down to two choices:

  1. Salvador Allende Therapy.
  2. Julius Streicher Therapy.

Which will it be?

~~~
This was my question about Syria. I’m not saying that ISS is Assad or anyone else weren’t important issues, but we shouldn’t step up to be team america world police whenever everyone else wants to stick their heads in the sand.
At least Venezuela is in our hemisphere, but you are right. Why isn’t this primarily something for South American nations to assist with?
