Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claimed Tuesday that embattled Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro was preparing to leave the country for Cuba, but was talked out of it by Russia.
"We've watched throughout the day, it's been a long time since anyone's seen Maduro," Pompeo said in an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room."
"He had an airplane on the tarmac, he was ready to leave this morning as we understand it and the Russians indicated he should stay."
"He was headed for Havana," Pompeo said.

I thought Putin might becoming reasonable and not want to be enemy with the US.
But this was and is a very bad situation.

I think Putin was very measured in dealing with Obama’s promotion of ISIS more or less in his backyard. I can understand him not trusting the US, and wanting to get back at us by establishing a foothold in our backyard.
Maduro and Chavez were stupid, greedy, arrogant, and incompetent. They mortgaged their country to Russia, Cuba, and China. The mortgage holders don’t want to go away empty handed.

The obvious question is what happens next? Do we send marines in to finish the job? Or do we just let this fester?

Yeah, especially after we have treated him with such friendship and haven’t done anything to screw with him around his borders, falsely made him and his country the scapegoat for Hillary’s loss. Supported that farce with a raft of economic sanctions. Since we haven’t done anything like that, you’d expect he would support our national goals.
Weird.
If Venezuelans hadn’t given up their guns they would be able to oust the succession of dictators and foreign provocateurs that now plague them. Their predicament is a cautionary tale for those in America who would limit the Second Amendment.

So the Russians are effectively in control of a country in our hemisphere. We need to apply more pressure. If we don’t they will see it as weakness and look for more places to cause trouble. Time for a display of our strength and raw power.
Or maybe Putin just didn’t want this kind of hot potato handed to him. Madura and his crimes and failures are going to have a lot of people pissed off at him, and the Russians don’t want to be seen as giving him sanctuary in Cuba. (Of course if they start actively trying to keep him in power, then maybe I’m wrong.)
Putin wants that military base in Venezuela. Not gonna happen.

There is good reason to keep China and Russia and Iran out of Venezuela. But at most maybe some air is all we should provide. Maybe ammo.
The Venezuelan people need to do the fighting. I mean 100%. They voted the SOB in. Time for them to stand up and do some Concord and Lexington stuff down there.
But no, we don’t need to murder our Marines in a south American civil war in a swampy mountainous nation in South America the size of Texas.
Let’s see. Maduro leaves his embattled country for good and Cuba falls. We declare Cuba a no-fly zone. Maduro gets arrested and is returned to face justice. Sounds fair.

Clearly we should send in the Marines. There must be a handful that don’t have PTSD yet. We have been at war for 18 straight years in 4 countries. (Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, & Syria) Why not add a 5th and more years?...

Make it an OAS (Organization of American States) joint effort led by the US. Columbia and Brazil have already indicated they will support the US.
