If it was always there, I think there would have been lawsuits and prosecutions, a la the Catholic Priest cases.

Pope Benedict was right on the money about there being a societal problem. The Catholic Church was certainly not immune and many of her leaders failed her, but identifying it as a Catholic thing allowed and allows others to fly below the radar.
I learned some years after returning home from the military that some of the bigger kids in one of the troops local to my high school had raped several of the smaller boys.
I don’t know if the adults covered that up, or never found out.
Just the minute the BS “leadership” declared open season on “gay Scouts,” you just knew all of those kids whose camp “counselors” would be “enlightening” their charges to the real “fun” side of disfunctional!

How sad. My Scout troop 50 years ago gave me several great adult role models.
And remember that Jerry Sandusky was married to a woman, so just banning gays from becoming Scout Masters wouldn’t have entirely solved the problem.
Inventing a persecution for not being given an exemption quite correctly irritates a lot of people on this forum.
Yes, there are a few who only berate pedophile priests, but not that many.

Where I'm from, BSA was tightly linked to the United Way organization. United Way works its way into the upper echelons of municipal government wherever it takes hold, which used to be practically everywhere.
Maybe that explains how these attacks were kept quiet.
I worked at a Y-connected summer camp when I was a college student. The guy who ran it was a total straight shooter as far as I ever could tell. There was one maintenance guy who began to act a little flaky around the kids, and he was instantly dismissed.
I had nothing but admiration for the Camp Director, who was in my opinion a great man. Tens of thousands of kids went through that camp, and I never heard a negative comment.

I agree this has been since the gays came out wanting more than to keep govt out of their bedrooms. On camping trips (60s) we always had 2-3 dads for 15-20 boys weekends and summer camp.
