President Trump on Monday directed his administration to find ways to limit the number of foreigners who overstay short-term visas amid a broad push to curb immigration.

In a presidential memorandum, Trump ordered the State Department to work with governments of countries with total overstay rates of more than 10 percent in order to reduce the number.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, in consultation with the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is required to submit a report within three months that recommends policies that...

Good news.

How come he waited 27 months to start working on it?

Uncooperative DHS. Need to replace judges at all levels. Threats of being charged with obstruction. Need to retain Senate.

From the entire article, it sounds like he has been on this for a while with an uncooperative DHS.

All the above while dealing with all the other problems this country has and all the other obstacles thrown in his way.

Did you see the article yesterday (can’t recall source) stating GOP large donors have _begun_ to fund Trump 2020?

Immigration has been my Number One issue at Free Republic since we crushed the Bush-McCain Amnesty in 2005.

Quantifiably, Trump has only one achievement on the immigration issue - he reduced “refugee” admissions (NOT related to border jumpers) from 80,000 to less than 30,000 per year.

On every other important metric, Trump is within plus-or-minus 10% of Obama’s numbers.

Trump has actually increased OPT work visas for foreign STEM graduates from USA colleges - from about 150,000 to 200,000.

Bottom Line - Trump has always been an immigration dove, except on the campaign trail.

I agree with Ann Coulter - on the immigration issue, Trump isn't even trying.

Frustrated here as our foster daughter (not legal) from Belarus has been coming here since 2002 at age 10 on a visa and at age 27 has been here twice now with her new husband. Always goes home on time. We would love to help her get dual citizenship but have been told there is no way. They are college educated and have professions, jobs and own an apartment there. Would love to have the freedom to travel back and forth without visas and own property here. Just not fair.

In all his rallies, he has always promised to increase immigration based on merit.

And why did he grant so many more? The best way to stop overstays is to tell crony corporations there will be zero H1Bs until All the overstays are rounded up at their expense.
These corporations dodge untold billions on taxes by saying Anericans are too stupid to work here. Of course they get a litttle help from their government universities.

I have a friend whose son had a student visa to study in Denmark.

He was given a strict warning when he entered the country to be out by the expiration date on his visa. Then he had to apply for the equivalent of a Danish social security number. He needed that number to do EVERYTHING from open a bank account to rent an apartment to buy passes for the transit system.

On the day the visa expires, so does the number, turning one into a legal and economic pumpkin.

Needless to say he was gone before that date came.

Thank you for the link to the Conservative Review article on work permits for bogus asylum seekers.

I read Immigration articles every day, and I had no idea that was happening.

I also had no idea that Trump’s Border Policy was “Catch and Release” until the “Mexican Caravans” started arriving at the border in 2017, and the MSM could not conceal it any more.

I just posted your Daniel Horowitz/CR article on Free Republic.

Please check it out for more Comments.

It’s about time a President decided to enforce our immigration laws and deport people.

I think Eisenhower was the last one to take this stuff seriously.

Re: “Go back under your rock....”

I can do much better than that, bert.

Show me an important immigration metric that Trump has improved more than 10%, and I will retract my Comment and apologize.

By the way - I just discovered that Trump is issuing “discretionary” work permits to every asylum applicant who gets “Catch and Release,” which is at least 80% of them.

It's another opportunity to insult me!

you’re off base. Trump was trying to work on immigration prior to the 2018 midterms. McConnell put the kabosh on it, if you recall, saying it would be taken up after the midterms. A year later, and the Republican Senate, and McConnell, is still sitting on their duffs while Trump has done the heavy lifting, getting what he can get done with exec power.
