The DAs letter says: "Criminalizing poverty is counter-productive for our communitys health and safety. For that reason, this office will not prosecute theft of personal items less than $750 unless the evidence shows that the alleged theft was for economic gain."

What?
When I was dirt poor, I was a repeated victim of thieves. A theft of personal property of less than $750 was devastating to me. Stealing my son’s <$100 bicycle meant he didn’t have a bicycle, and I didn’t have $100 to replace it.

The word gets out quickly about something like this. Even if it’s a real policy, you should never ever publicly admit it. Who are these geniuses?

Not new. Most haven’t prosecuted for anything less than $1000 for decades.

Looks like a fine time to open a turnstile installation company in the Dallas area.
The thief may not be charged/prosecuted for the theft,
but that doesn't mean they have to be let go with the goods.

This practice in Seattle is killing retail in its downtown. The shoplifters steal from stores day after day without repercussions to pay for their drug habit. Many retailers are moving to the east side which is relatively crime free.

Awsome- so everyone should all move to dallas and become thieves- Doesn’t matter if one is a good thief or bad- one can’t be prosecuted if one keesp it under $750 steal food, clothes, jewelry, gasoline, whatever we want, as long as it’;s not for ‘personal economic gain’ and is always under $750- We never have to buy any of these things again

Great second job. Rob less than $750 on any given day, and you stay free, to do it again, and again. Best part...you don’t have to pay taxes on what you steal.
