My brother in law recently retired from the Chicago justice system. He worked with dangerous juvenile offenders, mostly gang members who would just as soon kill you as shake your hand. He said he would look into their eyes and see nothing. By the time they were the age of the “kid” who got let off as a youthful offender they were already lost. He didn’t believe in rehabilitation and he has no faith in his fellow human beings, having spent a career dealing with the worst humanity has to offer. Now he tends his garden, goes fishing and avoids contact with other people as much as possible.
