The electoral college is a failure. The Founding Fathers would probably agree (Mega Barf Alert)

As the presidential campaign heats up, so too has the movement to abolish or otherwise neutralize the electoral college.

Some advocates argue that the electoral college was originally established to help less-populated states retain power, or to have every part of the country heard from in electing a chief executive. Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) claims the system was designed to help the slave states.

But these are modern interpretations of what really happened at the Constitutional Convention of 1787. The electoral college was designed with two purposes: to separate the branches of government in an attempt to avoid “cabals” and to prevent foreign corruption. Some of the Founding Fathers assumed it would almost never actually elect a president. In other words, we could say the electoral college failed to achieve most of what the founders designed it to do.

The electoral college was not a replacement for direct election — because that possibility never received serious consideration at the convention. (Only two of 11 states voted for a popular election of the president.) As James Madison’s notes make clear, there was very little support for a popular election of the president. The original idea in his influential Virginia Plan was that the new bicameral legislature — Congress — would itself gather to elect the executive, and the convention repeatedly returned to that idea.

The founding fathers wanted Los Angeles, Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia and Detroit to determine every single presidential election?

Heck no. The founding fathers were smart and included an additional check in the process. They knew the crooked nature of humans and people cannot be trusted.

Thanks EdnaMode. If NPV passes in time, in winning the popular vote, President Trump will win the electoral votes of NY and CA. Then watch the same DUmmies and media shills bitch that the electors should be faithless and cast their votes for the Demagogic Party nominee.

The Electoral College is what keeps us a Republic. Without it I think the US will fracture into a few different nations. And that would not be good for our future.

Read 55 Men The Story of the Constitution by Rodell.

He gives the clearest reflection of why they did created the Electoral College...and it was applicable particularly to the Obama Elections.

i.e., when the have nots outnumber the haves.

Obama actually beat out the intention of the Electoral College by selecting "districts" to produce the numbers to grab the electoral votes in particular states.

Ex. Ca & NYS didn't have to do much. Pennsylvania, Florida...etc etc...

What a bunch of uneducated nonsense. Not only does the Electoral College work as designed, but the Founders would be appalled at the 16th and 17th Amendments!

One gave the Federal Government practically unlimited power and the other removed a key check on the Federal Government, the control the individual states had over the Senate to protect the interests of the Individual States.

As James Madison’s notes make clear, there was very little support for a popular election of the president.

Our Founders knew exactly what a dictator was. They had read ancient history. They studied all the Roman dictators. They knew what makes a dictator, and they did everything they could to prevent a dictator from becoming president of the United States.

The electoral college is one of those secret ingredients that probably didn't seem like a big deal at first, but without it we would have the most evil woman to have ever lived in the entire history of mankind as president.

The Electoral College is a HUGE success. It kept an evil witch Hillary Clinton from stealing the Presidency! We need to keep it in order to prevent a new witch Ocasio-Cortez from destroying our country if she gets idiots to vote for her in future presidential elections.

The electoral college proved its worth by preventing states like California from stealing the elections with illegal votes.

This country is not a democracy and never was. It is a republic of states. Unfortunately, ever since FDR, the power of the state has been diminished and we’ve become a federalized society. All problems that should be handled by the states are now turned into a federal issue. We all need to repeat - we are not a democracy and were never intended to be.

The only upside of this chicanery where states pass laws to “honor the national popular vote” is that once NY and California alone drive every election they will move to ruin america at warp speed and the states can at least change that law to “award all electoral votes to the candidate that won the state of Alabama” to put a stop to it.
