Turkey: After election gains, Kurds fear Erdogan's reach

"We are very pleased that we won the local elections. Now the will of the people must finally be accepted. Only our own city administration can guide our destiny," a young woman told DW. Two older ladies with headscarves joined the conversation. "Why should a forced administration come in now?" they asked. "What do they want here? We will not accept that. May God protect the winners of the elections. "But on the streets of Diyarbakir, the second-largest city in the southeastern Turkish region of Anatolia, people often ask what good a democratically legitimated mayor is, if the AKP government's imposed administrators are sent from Ankara anyway?

Pro-Kurdish HCP representative Feleknas Uca: Our victory is the result of Erdogan's actions

In last weekend's local elections, Diyarbakir clearly went to the pro-Kurdish HDP, with almost 63 percent. HDP representative Feleknas Uca says the numbers are historic.

"The result is the people's response to annihilation, denial and heteronomy [by the Erdogan government, the Eds.]," Uca told DW.

Although the HDP lost some communities in the west of the country, it won the highly contested metropolitan regions of Diyarbakir, Van and Mardin. It was able to take back a total of 48 communities from the AKP.

Well, the local elections are over in Turkey. HDP the Pro Kurdish party won 48 communities.

In 2016, the Turkish government dismissed the mayor of Diyarbarkir, Gultan Kisanak, sentenced her to 14 years imprisonment and sent an AKP administrator to the city; in 96 other Kurdish cities, mayors and municipal councils were replaced by administrators with AKP party members as well. 40 mayors were removed and are still in custody today.

Will Erdogan again remove those elected and replace them with Ankara and AKP approved administrators?

Probably.

“Will Erdogan again remove those elected and replace them with Ankara and AKP approved administrators?”

That may very well provoke a shooting war. Just what NATO needs is a member having a civil war. We have nukes stored there if I remember right.

If I remember correctly, someone stated the nukes were removed.

US moves nuclear weapons from Turkey to Romania

But I am not sure. Because there is also this:

President Trump, will you remove US nuclear weapons from Turkey?

Pompeo and Trump warned Turkey about invading Syria to attack the Kurds.

Kurds now have decided they will liberate Efrin (Afin). Turkey might actually loose their ISIS scum there. They have been routinely killing them for over a year now. 5-15 per week on average.

Should be interesting.

My pleasure.

It is hard to describe anything from internal sources in Turkey. Their press is totally state controlled. You print what Erdogan wants, or they put you in jail and torture you.

Germany has mixed coverage. This is the German Federal Press basically. Generally it is accurate.

For a long time the US media has been drifting in the direction of Pravda during the USSR. I long for the days when newspaper men actually attempted to convey the truth.

But then I look at Turkey and the current dictatorship and I feel very blessed to live in the US, especially in Texas.

At least we can so far express our contempt for the lies of the press. Of course they are attempting to filter the web to make that more difficult.

Welcome to the battle and the party. Pick your side and engage.

“I long for the days when newspaper men actually attempted to convey the truth.”

Those days are long gone, my friend. And they won’t be back anytime soon.

“Pick your side”

I have.

“and engage.”

That will be at a time and place of my choosing.

With any luck we will be joining you in Texas. Hopefully that will be before my state of Illinois implodes completely.

Good luck.

Welcome matte is always out.

Be sure and bring your weapons with you when you come.

We might some day need them. (doubt it. smile. I’ve read there are 3 firearms in private hands per ever man woman and child in Texas)

“Be sure and bring your weapons with you when you come.”

Oh we will.

“I’ve read there are 3 firearms in private hands per ever man woman and child in Texas.”

We are well above average then.

Good luck, sir.
