They suggest that using their extension bypasses censorship. I have not used this extension, so maybe it has a decent search function, but there are many ways to avoid search censorship. To use Dissenter, you just paste the url you want to comment on in the Dissenter website. I don't have any browser, email, etc. function on my phone, so it's possible that some "smart phone" systems support only one browser with a kind of built in censorship. If I had such a phone I would get rid of it.

On the other hand, maybe their "extension" has ads or something that pays Gab. I don't know. I don't want any "extension" on my phone. Don't need it. I use my phone to make/receive calls and receive messages (although I don't even like messaging). I don't want my computer to look like a phone and vice-versa.

I posted to Dissenter today on This article

OK. Doing a little more research it looks like there’s a web app you can log into and use to post and view comments in lieu of downloading the extension.
The article didn’t mention that.

I see what you mean. Maybe some users don't know how to use a website unless it claims to be an "app," and they thought that for those individuals it would be too difficult to explain why you don't need the "extension."

This is Free Republic, minus admins and without the need to create an original post.
Sounds wonderful, until liberals undertake a denial-of-service attack on it.

I posted a thread once and found a porno image posted in a reply. I immediately hit the “Abuse” button, and the mods killed it and banned to poster. If there are no mods, there is no abuse button, and . . .

I notice the presence of “likes” in Dissenter; maybe there is a way of voting posters off your own personal view of Dissenter at your own discretion. And maybe I could decide that I trust you to make that decision, and piggyback on your list of banned posters.

The reality is IMHO that without any mod function you will soon find it looking like a stall in a public bathroom. So I wonder what functionality exists in Dissenter. If none, IMHO Dissenter is not long for this world.

Come on now. I’m not easily bamboozled.
The natural disposition is always to believe. It is acquired wisdom and experience only that teach incredulity, and they very seldom teach it enough. The wisest and most cautious of us all frequently gives credit to stories which he himself is afterwards both ashamed and astonished that he could possibly think of believing.Adam Smith, Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759)
We come to FR to pool our (individually insufficient) “incredulity.”

If Dissenter provides that function widely on the Internet, so much the better.

Does Dissenter work on Wikipedia articles?

That’s sorely needed, because Wikipedia is essentially MSM - reliable enough, unless the topic has political implications. And predictably “liberal” on topics that do.

This is just shouting into the echo chamber.

Actually the original censored website is the echo chamber. Dissenter would allow all opinions and thus it isn't an echo chamber.

It isn't that Dissenter doesn't allow other opinions.

I just think that the way it's being marketed (at least in this article) and its association with Gab will very much limit its audience.

The article doesn't describe the app very well.

Yes starting out, Dissenter would be used in smaller numbers. But over time, if more people prefer a place where both conservative and liberal opinion can be expressed, then more people will click on Dissenter in their browser.

I hear you but I wouldn't consider a lot of the opinions that get people banned to be 'conservative'.

Perhaps they will censor obscenities and posts that advocate violence.

Probably.

When it comes to suppressing certain opinions I blame the tech companies a lot less than many here do.

I think they're just making a rational response to the demands of the advertisers.

I don't blame politics when there's a simpler economic answer.
