Pressure has been mounting for congressional leaders to release the names of lawmakers who have settled sexual harassment claims at the taxpayers expense. House members from both parties as well as President Donald Trump have said that they believe Congress should disclose the settlements as it involves taxpayer money. Congress is a place that notoriously protects their own so many in the public don’t know what is exactly going on on Capitol Hill. Rep. Ron DeSantis from Florida said in an interview "It's taxpayer dollars at issue; taxpayers have a right to know how their money is being spent," He went on to say that he does not understand "why the taxpayer should ever be on the hook for private misconduct of a member.”

So yeah, Congress is really under pressure to release the names of those that paid out $17 million after last year's revelation, as they now demand the release of the "Full Mueller Report" immediately. Also before replying to any questions from any congressman on any committee, Trump Administration officials should demand that the questioner declare if they had settled any sexual harassment cases or not, the people have a right to know.

So why don’t journos and/or constituents just ask every Critter and Senator if the pol is party to ANY non-disclosure agreement.

A refusal to answer should be considered an admission.

Exactly, the media is in collusion with members of Congress of both parties. Both are obstructing justice. We need the names to determine if crimes were committed and by whom.

No. Change the rules going forward but not retroactively. Are some congresscritters guilty of sexual harassment? Yes, of course. Are Members of Congress sometimes targets of shakedown scams and vengeful claims by disgruntled employees and former employees? Yes, of course. And do Members of Congress sometimes find themselves in gray area situations, often alcohol fueled, that can be subject to reinterpretation years later when a complainant has discovered new priorities? Yes, of course.

I'm sure that the sealed records contain the names of some authentic sexual predators. But I would guess that the majority of them involve gray area cases, with some outright extortion scams thrown in.

Congress had a process that allowed complaints to be filed on a promise of privacy. The secrecy would have encouraged some people to press sketchy complaints that they would be embarrassed to air publicly because their own behavior was clearly contributory. The secrecy would also have encouraged some Members of Congress to agree to settlements just to make nuisance claims go away. In other words, I would not for a moment expect that all of the sealed cases involve real abuse. But that is how it would be reported. It is inherently unfair to unseal these sorts of records.

This is the same Congress that had all of its computer files hacked by foreigners—and the CIA, right?

So, you are fine if dozens of national intelligence services as well as a wide variety of criminal organizations and lobbyists (oh, but I repeat myself :-) ) have the dirt (or alleged dirt) on Congress. You just don’t want the public to find about it.

If this information is released then the Congress-critters can’t be blackmailed any more on this stuff—and one slimy octopus tentacle is removed from the swamp.

Let them be humiliated by true or false charges released to the public—cry me a river.
