The First Amendment protects the right of the People to publish. Just posting here on Free Republic is me exercising my First Amendment freedom of the press.
In the 1700s, freedom of speech was good literally only as far as a town crier on a soapbox could be heard. Publishing allowed for thought to be carried throughout the nation.
Freedom of speech is literally speaking, being allowed to speak for oneself. Publishing is not speech, it is press; however, it shares the same First Amendment protection as speech, and the two are taken together as one.
However, the First Amendment is NOT meant to be "speech" for you and me, and "press" for so-called journalists. It is speech for you and me and journalists, and publishing for you and me and journalists, too. And the President, as well. He has the freedom of speech, and the freedom of Twitter.
