Stop & Shop union says contract offers ‘draconian’ cuts as employees rally at Chicopee store

Hundreds of union members and their supporters rallied Wednesday at the Memorial Drive Stop & Shop, calling on the company to offer employees represented by United Food & Commercial Workers locals in New England a better contract and threatening to strike if it doesn’t happen.

“What do we want," the call and response chant went. “Contract! If we don’t get it? Shut it down!”

...

UFCW says Stop & Shop is proposing a bad deal for workers that would cut current benefits, including health and welfare and pension plans, replace Sunday time-and-a-half pay with a smaller wage premium and cut paid holidays, vacations and sick days for new hires. The union says the company has proposed bonuses in lieu of cost-of-living wage increases.

Stop & Shop management said it wants a deal that will allow it to grow its business in a competitive environment. Stop & Shop is the only large fully unionized food retailer left in New England. Company officials say it must have a deal that allows it to compete with nonunion employers like Big Y, Market Basket, Walmart, Whole Foods/Amazon, Costco and Aldi.

...

UFCW Local 1459 president Tyrone C. Housey said there is another bargaining session set for next week. He wants to go back into bargaining after having demonstrated unity at Wednesday’s picket.

“We want to send a message to the company,” he said. “We are going to stand up and fight back.”

Another issue for the union is Stop & Shop’s continued deployment of technology including self-scanners at checkout, and “Marty” the roving robot.

“They are putting in these bagging carousels like at Walmart," Housey said. "We think they are taking away union jobs with all this technology.

No, they are responding to Union and government demands that pay $15/hr, get a pension, nearly 100% employer funded insurance, etc. So learn to use a wheel, it's not that hard.

Also by "taking away union jobs" you mean fewer unwilling people to fund your six-figure salaries and donations to Dem candidates.

These rats actually come from a rental place. I believe 7 different sizes are available, depending on your budget.

I always had the impression that Big Y was union as well.

As everyone knows, ShopRite is not, and they’re taking a lot of the business.

Unions in the 21st century are as relevant as the GAR was in the 20th.

Bagging carousels and the phrase “all this technology” being used by Union Management to get more money. LOL

Non-Union AND American owned with better quality fresh areas than S&S and places like Aldi and WM with lower prices on dry goods.

Drive some buses down to the border and get some real cheap replacement workers.

Interesting. I wonder if the UFCW made sure to hire a Teamster to deliver the rat, Bricklayers union to place the cinder blocks to anchor said rat, IBEW to plug in said rat, etc?

Looks like the employees are eating well. Wonder how much of that food was purchased.

Doesn’t matter what the wage rate is if they close their stores because they are non-competitive. Zero workers at $20 or $50 dollars an hour equals zero pay checks.

It’s pretty obvious that the owners should sell their company to the union. It’s certain that no one else would buy it.

FOFL

I recall during the auto company BKs ~~2008 the UAW was whining about their sacrifice, it was unfair, etc.

Someone suggested they take over Chrysler, since they seemed to know more about running it than management.

Picture a vampire and garlic...they had no interest.

I saw a comment online recently from a S&S employee. Essentially, they believed that the store couldn't close because they were Union or if it did the Union would somehow protect them.

I can think of two S&S stores in my area with much more competition than even a year or two ago. One has two non-union full service grocery stores directly across the street, visible from the S&S parking lot. Additionally a Costco, new Aldi and just renovated Super Target withing a half mile and a Super Center WalMart about 8-10 minutes away.

The store store where this rally was held practically shares a parking lot with a non-union competitor, a Super WalMart across she street and a Price Rite ~1.5 miles away.

Unions only know about extorting as much money from their members via dues as possible each week and every few years from their employer. They are the older version of AOC style business understanding.
