Some of the old timers will remember Gary Gilmore. He was executed in Utah back in 1977. Notable because his was the first execution (in the U.S.) in about 10 years as there were many court battles regarding capital punishment and for a time, it appeared that capital punishment would be banned in the U.S. permanently. But a lot of citizens wanted it and fought for it.

There was a book on this by Norman Mailer (a sympathetic treatment as I remember) that was actually quite good. I'll have to put it on my list to read again as it's been about 30 years since I read it the first time. Regardless, Gary Gilmore was a real piece of work and deserved the death penalty (which he insisted on being carried out).

Nahh, serial rapists and murderers are released to conservative areas with all sorts of promises of monitoring...which last for a week before they're found wandering around, eyeing the children. Judges always find some random reason to release them as far away as possible from their beloved liberal utopias.
