Remember usenet?

Even better, Do you remember when the unwashed masses of AOL were unleashed upon the internet? It's been downhill ever since.

One of the first things I found on the internet that I thought was really neat was some cartographic resources I found on a university gopher site. They had some really cool maps that I downloaded. I still have a couple of those maps lost somewhere here on my hard disk I think. I finally went through my bookmarks a year or two ago and pruned out the gopher sites that were still hanging around in my bookmark file. They weren't of any use any more not only because the gopher sites themselves were gone, but modern browsers do not even understand the gopher protocol. You used to be able to get to a site with gopher://site.foo.com/, but not any more.

Does anyone recall what Veronica, Jughead, and Archie have to do with the early internet?
