I played tennis in high school but I became a ROTC jock in college because a war was going on and I needed skills that couldn’t be learned on the tennis court. My father played tennis with General Westmoreland in Vietnam, but I was at a different level as a Captain of Infantry.
My wife’s sorority sister had a daughter who was on the professional tour. I learned from both of these experiences that tennis “coaches” were socially acceptable with a decent game, but who really made their living from their association with rich and famous people. The pinnacle of my tennis career was standing at almost the top of the ladder at Ft. Benning and Ft. Bragg, but it didn’t last long. My reputation as a rifle company commander took me further along the career track.
