U.S. Peace Talks With Taliban Trip Over a Big Question: What Is Terrorism?

DOHA, Qatar — Nearly 11 days after peace negotiations between the United States and the Taliban began with high hopes, it has become clear that any resolution to the 18-year war could be frustratingly slow.

One of the most prominent issues thwarting progress is a disagreement over a fundamental question: What is terrorism, and who is a terrorist?...

...American negotiators have insisted on specifying that Afghanistan not be used by “terrorist” groups, but the Taliban have resisted, saying there was no universal definition of terrorism.

The Taliban dragging their feet on one term might seem to be killing time, but officials, including current and former Taliban members, said it was a sensitive and existential issue for the group. It strikes at the core of the ideological narrative...

Until that "religion" undergoes reformation, they are all terrorists.

And one does not negotiate with terrorists in good faith.

Laws did not stop people from smoking marijuana, so the alternative was to legalize it and put a tax on it. Laws will not stop Muslims from killing Christians, so maybe we should legalize it and at least get some tax revenue? (argument by Democrats)

Sounds like Vietnam all over again.

Kill them ALL. Spare the infants.

If you want to be nice, put them on a deserted island and let them fend for

themselves or eat each other.

“Sounds like Vietnam all over again.”

Except for many folks on FR - Vietnam is a great place now. So yeah - lets just surrender to the Taliban, and in 45 years it will become the vacation destination of the Middle East.

i would say one difference between the two is the Vietnamese didn’t have long term plans to destroy us in the states.

There were no Vietnamese terrorist attacks in the states and no vast terrorist network aimed at destroying us.

they wanted us out and unfortunately we let them win.

But it ended there.

it will never ended with muzzies.

One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter. You can look it up but it depends on who is writing the story.

We may regret staying longer. As far as truly honoring those of our soldiers already fallen or maimed in Afghanistan, we can also regret leaving Afghanistan to renewed & increased internal carnage by the Taliban, as they try to overrun their opponents as soon as we leave.

I WANT to get out. I also want to truly honor our soldiers who have died for our efforts there. To my mind, the two ideas present a conflict as to how they can both be achieved.

we defeated the Vietnamese. Lock stock and barrel. We didn’t defeat the Chinese who poured in to fight in their stead. And rather than take on mainland China, we backed off.
