Except for many folks on FR - Vietnam is a great place now. So yeah - lets just surrender to the Taliban, and in 45 years it will become the vacation destination of the Middle East.
i would say one difference between the two is the Vietnamese didn’t have long term plans to destroy us in the states.
There were no Vietnamese terrorist attacks in the states and no vast terrorist network aimed at destroying us.
they wanted us out and unfortunately we let them win.
But it ended there.

One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter. You can look it up but it depends on who is writing the story.
We may regret staying longer. As far as truly honoring those of our soldiers already fallen or maimed in Afghanistan, we can also regret leaving Afghanistan to renewed & increased internal carnage by the Taliban, as they try to overrun their opponents as soon as we leave.
I WANT to get out. I also want to truly honor our soldiers who have died for our efforts there. To my mind, the two ideas present a conflict as to how they can both be achieved.
we defeated the Vietnamese. Lock stock and barrel. We didn’t defeat the Chinese who poured in to fight in their stead. And rather than take on mainland China, we backed off.
