This is a pretty significant pickup for the GOP in Kentucky tonight. #SD31

Democrats are doing pretty poorly overall in 2019 special elections thus far. They are at risk of giving back quite a bit of ground to the GOP if they can't right this ship.

Remember when the media plastered these special elections all over the internet? Every one was considered a harbinger of doom for the GOP? The GOP just flipped their 4th legislative seat in a row tonight.

Funny how you don’t hear a word about it in the MSM, huh? Two years ago if a Democrat running for dog catcher in Sheboygan won it was front page news.

KY-SD-31 is a rural D-held R+32 (but very historically D) seat in coalfields at the eastern tip of the state, including Pikeville, Louisa, and West Liberty.

Attorney Phillip Wheeler (R), whose father lost a State House primary in 2016, will face off with realtor Darrell Pugh (D). The race seems almost impossible to handicap, because this area is both overwhelmingly Trumpy and overwhelmingly Dem in heritage, and Dems have still held on reasonably well downballot here.

A blowout win for either candidate or anything in between are realistic possibilities.

Yep. There were a lot of “concerned people” posting every Democrat win on the front page here too.

This is actually a big deal. The Democrats have held this seat for a long long time. The GOP didn’t even field a candidate here last time.

Interesting as it went for Trump 80% but is a seat that has been held by Dems for decades.

This was the Kentucky county-level election map from the 2016 presidential election.

Trump won more than 80% of the vote in 25 different counties in Kentucky -- most of them in the Appalachian Mountain region of eastern Kentucky.

These are old-school Democrats who have become Republicans by default as the Democrats became the freak-show party.

Legislative, not federal. You’re not likely to hear about those outside the local area in which it occurs.

I knew we’d lose the midterms because they were flipping all the seats. Now it seems we are. Them winning the House may have helped Trump in terms of 2020.

Those KY Eastern Mountain counties only became Democrat with heavy unionization & FDR beginning in 1932. Many had been previously Republican in 1928 and back to the 19th century. That was the same story with neighboring WV, which had been heavily Republican from the 1890s until 1932.

I believe that you are correct, 2018 purged the worthless RINO’s from the HOR. Now everyone gets to see how batshit crazy the RATS are, and will vote in 2020 accordingly.
