In America, talk turns to something unspoken for 150 years: Civil war

At a moment when the country has never seemed angrier, two political commentators from opposite sides of the divide concurred last week on one point, nearly unthinkable until recently: The country is on the verge of "civil war."

First came former U.S. attorney Joseph diGenova, a Fox News regular and ally of President Trump. "We are in a civil war," he said. "The suggestion that there's ever going to be civil discourse in this country for the foreseeable future is over. . . . It's going to be total war."

The next day, Nicolle Wallace, a former Republican operative turned MSNBC commentator and Trump critic, played a clip of diGenova's commentary on her show and agreed with him - although she placed the blame squarely on the president.

Trump, she said, "greenlit a war in this country around race. And if you think about the most dangerous thing he's done, that might be it."

With the report by special counsel Robert Mueller reportedly nearly complete, impeachment talk in the air and the 2020 presidential election ramping up, fears that once existed only in fiction or the fevered dreams of conspiracy theorists have become a regular part of the political debate. These days, there's talk of violence, mayhem and, increasingly, civil war.

A tumultuous couple of weeks in American politics seem to have raised the rhetorical flourishes to a new level and also brought a troubling question to the surface: At what point does all the alarmist talk of civil war actually increase the prospect of violence, riots or domestic terrorism?

Speaking to conservative pundit Laura Ingraham, diGenova summed up his best advice to friends: "I vote, and I buy guns. And that's what you should do."

Of course the authors only wrote this because they believe it taints conservatives.

But they have a point.

If you ID 12 people who long for the inevitable CWII to start, close the 10 of them will be conservative.

And armed to the teeth.

And, disciplined enough to not fire the first shot.

But God have Mercy on the poor mfer who fires the first shot because there will be immediately 10 million rounds incoming. That is how bad it is.

Democrats are focusing on AR 15s. They should really be concerned about sniper rifles.

Available on Youtube is a six part documentary on The Spanish Civil War produced in 1986 by Grenada TV.

It's an excellent and even-handed survey of the conflict. Most noteworthy is the fact that in 1986 many of the principle actors, Spaniards and ex-patriots, were still alive and participated in documentary. Six hours well spent IMHO.

If we have a violent conflict in this country it will more likely resemble what happened in Spain rather than our War Between the States.

A shooting war won't start as long as Conservatives hold government power.

The Democrats worship government power.

One way it could happen would be if the Democrats gain the House, the Senate and the Presidency, but President Trump has appointed one or two more originalists and Textualists to the Supreme Court.

If the Progressives start ignoring the Supreme Court and/or packing the Court. It could ignite fireworks.

If they did, it would be fun to see the pretzel logic of them trying to explain how one doesn't need a 30-06 for hunting.

Has there ever been a civil war while the poorest people are the most likely to be obese and are the most entertained poor people ever? I guess you could say there is a first time for everything, because those things have never happened before either. Hard for me to imagine though, at least while these conditions persist.

I also think the folks who care about culture and politics (on either side) usually vastly overestimate the number of people who care as much as they do. And with social media and the 24 hour news seems like it’s worse than ever. On the other hand, supposedly for many civil wars relatively small minorities were involved, so who knows. You would think more would simply deign to vote before taking it to the streets or whatever.

The last civil war started with cannon fire at Fort Sumpter. Suspect this one will start with sniper fire. Suspect Antifa and their counterparts have already armed themselves.

The wild card is where will the military stand and will foreign entities supply the other side?

Unfortunately true, regardless of any other reason they may give. Instinctively they know, because of the garbage and lies they keep dishing out day after day, sooner or later the day of reckoning will come.

Any deer hunter who can take a buck at over 400 yards is a trained sniper. Deer hunters outnumber most of each of the world’s militaries.

Ah yes.

The scoped hunting rifle.

The most effective insurgency tool ever devised. And the bane of University Professors, Journalists and Politicians everywhere.

They will just say you don't need a scope for hunting.

The Democrats have not been concerned with logic or facts for at least 30 years, when it comes to guns.
