I know you are responsible to pay it back if original signee doesn’t, but i didn’t know you were responsible for investigation whether their financial information is factual or not.

But Cohen is STUPID and did incredibly stupid illegal things. Trump put him in a position to make a fortune legitimately. But he defrauded people and companies out of millions anyway.
Because: 1) It's the theoretical maximum, and 2) Even though the logical defense would be "My husband is a lawyer, and told/advised me to sign," Cohen's funds for legal defense were severely depleted or gone (remember, he lived large on borrowed money), and he was scared, because he knew he was undoubtedly going to jail.
