UC Berkeley police have identified a man suspected of punching a right-wing activist on Sproul Plaza on Tuesday but he has not been arrested yet, nor have police released his name.
Videos of the incident went viral this week, after they were shared by conservative groups and figures calling the assault a leftist attack on students’ free speech. UC Berkeley has said, however, that neither the activist or the man suspected of punching him are students, and there is no indication the man is affiliated with any left-wing groups.
The most-viewed video begins in the middle of an altercation between two young men, one of whom was recruiting on Sproul Plaza for Turning Point USA, a national nonprofit that organizes right-wing college students.
In the video, the Turning Point recruiter is holding his phone out, appearing to film the other man. The man walks into the recruiter and swings his sweatshirt at him.

If the aggressor was not a student, what was the aggressor’s business on campus ?

Well, it is and has always been an open campus. Anyone can stroll around, and non-students sometimes do research at one of the campus libraries. Nonetheless, the fact that the perp was a wearing a student-style backpack would suggest that he likely is taking classes there.

well, that’s why I’m asking. The school says neither are students.
So, if you’re not a student, why walk around with a backpack, number one. And if you’re not a student, why cause a scene (that will potentially affect admissions or access), number two. Just strikes me as a bit odd.

If it had been me, I’d be in jail, because after the first punch, I’d have put several holes in the MFer.
Tie him to a post - and let the guy he beat up take a sledge hammer to him ... Or better still, strip him butt naked, tie him to a concrete pillar, and hand the other guy a bull whip fitted with pieces of bone and steel hooks. Skin the bastard alive.
