I always felt that states rights was the camels back and slavery and the right of a state to leave the Union was the straw that broke it. Lincoln intended to preserve the Union. Doing so had to abolish slavery as part of that effort. IMO

For a short time after secession happened, every thing got back to normal.

The one exception was that the Union government lost its ability to collect tariffs.

The only man with the power to conduct war said in his inaugural speech that war would not happen if the South paid up.

War came.
