Jussie Smollett could face more than a decade in prison
Washington Examiner ^ | 1/20/ 2019 | Jerry Dunleavy

Under Illinois state law, filing a false police report is a Class 4 felony which carries a sentence of one to three years in prison.

•Mailing threatening communications — If federal investigators believe Smollett was involved with mailing himself the threatening letter, then it is possible that he could be charged with mailing threatening communications, which consists of “knowingly so depositing or causing to be delivered ... any communication … addressed to any other person and containing any threat to injure the person of the addressee or of another” and can result imprisonment of up to five years.

•Additional federal charges related to hoax threats (up to five years in prison), conspiracy (up to five years in prison), and obstruction of justice (with a variety of penalties) could all also potentially come into play if Smollett is determined to have carried out the mail threat hoax too.

I'd be happy with anything over a year.

The chances of him serving a year in prison are less than the chances that all the air in the room you are in right now spontaneously rushing to an isolated corner and suffocating you. It could happen, but the odds are vanishingly small.

He’ll get probation. Should be jail time-30 days minimum to prove a point.

“Jussie Smollett could face more than a decade in prison”

What if the defence claims “method acting”

I favor him to receive all of the following:

1. A reasonable jail term, at least a year.
2. Required to fully admit to the hoax, with no qualifiers.
3. 200 hours community service working in local emergency rooms, so he can see real victims that the police couldn’t help because they were wasting manpower chasing down his lies.

Even though the evidence and testimony appear to be a sure thing, I’ll be surprised if there is anything but a hung jury.

Remember the nature and location of that local jurisdiction...

Probably a fine and community service. Then the televised rehab tour about how he was “forced” to lie because of the inherent racism of President Trump and the people that support him.
Just more b.s., then he will get a job at MSNBC or CNN as an elections correspondent.

I said it on another thread. Smollet has committed the unpardonable sin of embarrassing the Powers That Be here in Chicago, including the Mayor. He’s fresh out of friends and he’s gonna pay.

We have had over 200 shootings and 50 murders, including a 1 year old boy. This clown wasted thousands of hours of police time and hundreds of thousands of dollars in resources.

No, he’s gonna serve some serious time. And that’s if the Feds don’t claim him first.

I think for him to get zero jail-time....he’ll have to pay for the police investigation, court-costs, and admit he has some kind of drug issue/mental issue requiring 30 days in some facility/rehab center. You go and figure police and court time and costs....I’d figure it’s around $60,000 spent at this point.

I would be curious about the two pretender-Nigerian brothers (they were actually born in the US and grew up in Chicago). I think they want zero jail-time, and will go to any length to avoid it.

Defining the actual crime the fauxgerian brothers committed is tough. Something along conspiracy lines, but once they revealed that their “victim” orchestrated his “assault” I don’t think there’s actually much to charge them with.
