That is very likely true. Of course, there were slave owners who mistreated their slaves but the vast majority treated them well. Slaves cost too much to do otherwise. My great-grandmother said of her ancestors who owned a few slaves that the slaves and the owners ate out of the same pot and their homes were not that much different than their owners' farm houses. Not talking about big plantations here, but the average farm where perhaps a handful were still in the family. She said her grandparents were glad when they were freed because they had to be looked after like children unlike hire hands.
