Belarus is ready to merge with Russia, Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko said on the third and last day of his bilateral talks with President Vladimir Putin on Friday.
Rumors resurfaced this year that Russia could annex Belarus as Putin’s constitutional term limits bar him from running for the presidency in 2024.
“The two of us could unite tomorrow, no problem,” Lukashenko said in a video.
“But are you – Russians and Belarussians – ready for it?” Lukashenko said as quoted by Interfax. “We’re ready to unite and consolidate our efforts, states and peoples as far as we’re ready.”
Putin, meanwhile, stressed that “fully independent states simply do not exist in the world,” bringing the European Union as an example of interdependence.
The Russian president has voiced support for Russia to unite with Belarus as early as 2011.

Belarus is the last European communist state. So this union would presumably end that.

Lukashenko has been a nutjob ever since he took over 30 years ago. I wouldn’t put anything past him. He’s as likely to declare Belarus to BE the actual Russia.

Putin mouths the right things but never seems to get this done. I don’t think he wants to take on the expense of this basket case.

It’s been part of Russia since 1795.
Before that it was part of Poland/Lithuania.

It fact there is no antisemitism to speak of in Kazakhstan and it a relatively advanced country to the point that even the scenery for Borat was found in Romania which is a EU member.

That is given Russia would not turn back to socialism in ten years which is not impossible. Belarus is not communist and to call it a dictatorship is a sort of exagerration but it is heavily socialist and very authoritarian. Rather close to a real thing.
The way things are going a union state of Russia, Belarus, Ukraine and probably Kazakhstan is inevitable although not in a near future. It would be pity if it would be modeled after Belarus though.
