Federal workers could see 1.9 percent pay increase in bill to avoid shutdown

Internal Revenue Service employee Mary Maldonado, of Dracut, Mass., center, displays a placard during a rally by federal employees and supporters, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019, in front of the Statehouse, in Boston, held to call for an end of the partial shutdown of the federal government.

WASHINGTON — Federal workers would receive a 1.9 percent pay increase under language included in legislation aimed at averting a government shutdown, according to House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, D-Md.

The pay hike would be less than the 2.6 percent increase the military received in legislation that Congress passed last year.

President Donald Trump has proposed a pay freeze for federal employees. But lawmakers from the Washington area, who represent tens of thousands of federal workers, have been pushing to get them a pay increase.

The final language of the legislation to avoid the shutdown is still being worked out.

For the pay raise to go into effect, the bill would have to be passed by the House and Senate, then receive the president’s signature.

Lawmakers are also trying to include language in the legislation that would provide back pay to federally contracted workers, related to the 35-day shutdown. The legislation is supported by lawmakers from Virginia, Maryland and D.C.

That’s enough of a reason to veto it.

Trump must veto this bill. What they did is exchange his demand for 5.7B for a wall for a puny amount for a wall plus a raise for the dem workers. BTW, they ALL got a COLA raise at the end of the year, so, this is nothing more than more payments to an over paid bunch to begin with.

That is incorrect. There are no automatic COLAs for federal salaries.

They didn’t get COLA in January. That was taken out during the big budget last year.

How wonderful for them. They mess the country over and get a raise. Some of us peons haven’t had a raise in 14 years.

My error on the COLA. I got mixed up with the other pay benefits like step increases, bonuses, promotions et al. Sorry for that.

I know it is a popular thing to beat up the fed work force on many issues like benefits. But when it comes to pay I generally found most of those I dealt with were over paid in comparison to private sector personnel doing the same or a similar job when benefits such as job protections came into play. I speak from experience of working both inside and outside the government. The one thing the fed work group has is a lot of political clout in and around DC with the Dem Party. They vote for the dems because that is who buys their votes. In the DC area, they are surrounded by those who live off the fed government almost 100%.

The DC area federal reps are somewhat different than the big city commie dems from elsewhere in the country. I call them the fed socialist type of Dem, not the ones who want a new system as it would put them out of business.

Depends on where the Federal workers work - spent 24 years in uniform and another 15 as a DOD Civilian——many are dead weight but a lot of others are solid workers.
I managed to fire 2 of the worst dead weight folks but it was a tedious process.

Must be nice. I work in the private sector. I got a 1.6% increase with a side order of “it’s a matter of time before you’re laid off”. Many friends got no increase at all. Some more got laid off.

Why a increase to federal workers to avoid a shutdown. Federal workers have no say over whether a shutdown occurs.

I could see an increase after then next shutdown (if it comes to that!) as a “bribe” for good behavior. As part of a negotiating & settlement tactic.

Where did you get the idea that federal workers are having a say in whether a shutdown occurs?

They have no "say" - not directly. This is all being managed on behalf of their Sugar Daddies in Congress.

Behave??? LOL! You don't seem to understand the absolute symbiotic relationship between Congress and the Federales.

Congress gives govies wonderful benefits with little demands, and govies vote for DemocRATs and Bush-League Republicans.
