Deal reached to avert new US government shutdown

... They tentatively agreed to far less money for President Donald Trump's border wall than the White House's $US5.7 billion ($NZ8.4b) wish list, settling for a figure of nearly $1.4 billion, according to congressional aides. The funding measure is through the fiscal year, which ends on 30 September.

The agreement means 88km of new fencing - constructed through existing designs such as metal slats instead of a concrete wall - but far less than the 350km the White House demanded in December. The fencing would be built in the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. The agreement yielded curbed funding, overall, for ICE detention beds, which Democrats promised would mean the agency would hold fewer detainees than the roughly 49,000 detainees held two days ago, the most recent date for which figures were available. Democrats claimed the number of beds would be reduced to 40,520.

But a proposal to cap at 16,500 the number of detainees caught in areas away from the border - a limit Democrats say was aimed at preventing overreach by the agency - ran into its own Republican wall.

Democrats dropped the demand in the latest round of talks, and the mood in the Capitol improved markedly.

Mr Trump met earlier today with top advisers in the Oval Office to discuss the negotiations. He softened his rhetoric on the wall but ratcheted it up when alluding to the detention beds issue...

Politico: ”But it's unclear if the pitch will be enough to win over party's liberal firebrands, who had called on Democratic leaders to not only reduce funding for homeland security but nix ICE funding all together.”

Heck yeah - let the RATs get blamed for this one ...

If Trump were smart, he would smile, say little, sign the deal and keep the government open. Then he would order as Commander in Chief the Army Corp of Engineers to build the wall he deems necessary and appropriate. He will then go into the 2020 election with the fait accompli that the American people really want.

The total length of the border is over 3000 km.

Politico:Negotiators agreed to fund a total of 40,520 detention beds for ICE, a roughly 17 percent reduction from current levels, the aide said.

But one Republican source was quick to dispute Democrats' account, saying the $1.375 billion in barrier funding can be used for "new miles of border wall." The same Republican source suggested that the deal had enough flexibility to actually reach the president's requested level of 52,000 beds, far above the negotiated level.

Look at this as a trial balloon - if the radical leftists don’t agree to this, they get blamed for the next shutdown - Pelosi controls the House ... will be an interesting vote ...

Takes two to ‘deal’. This is a proposal, and a pretty piss poor one at that.

The Democrats have one house of Congress but seem to always hold the cards. Funny how that works

CAVED? I want the full length of the wall, no DACA garbage, certainly no caps. Who are these “negotiators” for the Repubs? They are spineless trash with their tails between their legs.

To see where the GOP negotiating team is going they would have to have plexiglass bellybuttons. Their tails are not what’s between their legs, their heads are in the road.

I just emailed the White House again and counseled Mr. Trump to toss this terrible deal and get himself some decent courageous negotiators. The ones he has now absolutely stink. I’ve seen day-old kittens with more backbone and spunk than these current invertebrates. Who is doing the negotiating for US? I’d like names, please!

Based on the history of Republican's doing what they should do, are you giving any odds they will no break tradition of caving? If so I would like a little of the action.

I was aghast when I heard that Sen Shelby was leading the Senate negotiations for Republicans. He is a back-stabbing slimeball establishment nevertrumper. He supported the democrat, Jones, in the recent Alabama senate election. He also has threatened Trump if he were to Fire Muller or Sessions.
