U.S. Steel Firing Up Furnace In Alabama, Thanks To Tariffs
Breitbart ^ | 2-11-2019 | John Carney

Posted on 02/11/2019 5:53:48 PM PST by blam

United States Steel said Monday it will resume construction of a furnace in Alabama, adding 1.6 million tons of steelmaking capacity and hundreds of jobs.

Construction on U.S. Steel’s mill in Jefferson County, Alabama, was suspended in 2015 after China’s overproduction caused a global steel glut that sent prices plummeting. The tariffs the Trump administration imposed last year have reduced the flow of foreign steel in the U.S. and allowed domestic makers to expand again.

U.S. Steel Chief Executive Officer David Burritt said in a statement:

Thanks to the President’s strong trade actions and improved market conditions, support from the United Steelworkers and incentives from the State of Alabama and the Jefferson County Commission, we are excited to add EAF capabilities to our company’s footprint and provide sustainable tubular solutions for our customers.

EAF refers to “election arc furnaces,” which make steel from scrap metal instead of iron ore. They are considered more energy efficient than traditional blast furnaces and can be restarted once shut down. Older furnaces often had to be retired once they were shut down.

The Alabama plant will be the company’s second major expansion following the imposition of steel tariffs. The company restarted two blast furnaces at its mill near St. Louis last year.

U.S. Steel said the electric furnace and related casting equipment will cost about $215 million and will add about 150 workers to the existing 750-person workforce.

This is another sad example of the evil that Trump has brought to America while harming innocent anti America countries with his evil tariffs.

China has been dumping steel for 50 years. We need to win some of that production back.

A ‘good’ union steel worker will vote as his union instructs him and pull the D lever. Even if it means the shut down of the plant. We saw it with the coal miners supporting Obama, even though he promised to put them out of business. Heaven protect us from liberal lemmings.

That was then.

This is now.

Yeah probably. We need increased steel production from a national security standpoint. It’s not about a few hundred jobs in a steel factory.

The South has traditionally been against high tariffs. But that does not mean we’re against not-so-high tariffs. Liberals love to talk about slavery in that bad bad old Southland but love to let modern slave-labor produced goods roll into this country with no tariff at all. Let’s make some stuff here again.

I’m not sure the unions have that power in Alabama. Sure, Pittsburg or Cleveland...

Alabama is a right to work state.

We have the Hyundai plant right down the road from me. I do not believe it has a union presence, nor the sister KIA plant in West Point, Georgia, just over the border.

Someone needs to figure out what the hell is wrong with AK Steel, formerly ARMCO. All the others companies are opening plants and they’re shuttering a big one in Ashland, Ky. From thousands of workers to hundreds to no one. Iron and Steel have been a big part the town since the 1850s and the historic Hanging Rock Iron region. Sad.

Compare this to how the lame stream media would turn somersaults when it was announced that the Obummer economy had added a few thousand fast food jobs nationwide.

Speak for yourself buttwipe, but I know many ‘union’ steelworkers who happen to vote Republican, and are probably more conservative than YOU.

“I’m not sure the unions have that power in Alabama”.

Prolly because...

Along about 1950 there was a little dust up at a strip mine just north of Birmingham.

Some gentlemen from up North came in and dynamited the mine and the equipment after being told that there was no interest in the union there.

Then the gentlemen from up north surrounded the mine for a week and tried to kill my grandfather, my dad and my uncles who owned and ran that mine.

However, my dad and uncles (Marines) were just back from some activity over in the Pacific at places called Pellilu and Guadacanal were not too pleased with the mine and equipment being destroyed kicked their ass.

Then they sued the gentlemen from up North (who survived) and the AFL/CIO along with the local Sheriff who thought it a good idea to be absent during that week and then they went back to making a living.

Do tell ... Which coal miners supported 0bama?

Do you know which States produce the most coal? Do you know how those States voted in 2008 and 2012 (and 2016)?
