Europe may be on the cusp of a nightmare, but it’s not too late to wake up

MUNICH, Germany (Project Syndicate) — Europe is sleepwalking into oblivion, and the people of Europe need to wake up before it is too late.

If they don’t, the European Union will go the way of the Soviet Union in 1991. Neither our leaders nor ordinary citizens seem to understand that we are experiencing a revolutionary moment, that the range of possibilities is very broad, and that the eventual outcome is thus highly uncertain.

Most of us assume that the future will more or less resemble the present, but this is not necessarily so. In a long and eventful life, I have witnessed many periods of what I call radical disequilibrium. We are living in such a period today.

The first step to defending Europe from its enemies, both internal and external, is to recognize the magnitude of the threat they present. The second is to awaken the sleeping pro-European majority and mobilize it to defend the values on which the EU was founded.

The next inflection point will be the elections for the European Parliament in May 2019. Unfortunately, anti-European forces will enjoy a competitive advantage in the balloting. There are several reasons for this, including the outdated party system that prevails in most European countries, the practical impossibility of treaty change, and the lack of legal tools for disciplining member states that violate the principles on which the European Union was founded.

Wishful thinking by Soros.

A referendum on the EU would fail in most, if not all EU countries. Except MAYBE Germany.

The end of the Soviet Union was a good thing.

Absolutely on point.
It's still a mystery why someone from one of the countries he's victimized hasn't taken justice in their own hands already. Sometimes people can be too decent for their own good.

The end of the Soviet Union was a good thing.

Looks like Mr. Soros thinks otherwise, which is what I would have expected.

George pokes his head above ground!

I wonder where he is?

I’d just like to say “Hi” to him.

Where in the world is George Soros?

“The values upon which the EU was founded”?

This same line is used by the open borders crowd, here in the US.

Those values include “the rule of law” versus the rule “by man”. We don’t make laws based upon the plight or perceived plight of one or more individuals. What other countries do, I could frankly give a crap about.

The EU was founded upon the idea of an economic union. To that degree, that made sense. But it has since morphed into a nightmare morass of a bureaucratic cesspool in which the individual countries are ruled, remotely, from Brussels, without recourse, without a voice in this forced overlay upon their laws, that resembles nothing so much as having been militarily conquered. The elites who run this massive bureaucracy are paid minimally $150K a year with massive benefits. And there are about 50,000 of them, with a Euro population of about 742 MM. We have 535 senators and congresspeople, 75% of whom are complete morons. Imagine how much better life would be if only we had 2.1 times as as many of these flaming turds trying to run our lives and working to collect their grift. 1135 of them. They EuroBureaus live far better than the average Euro, even the average above-average Euro. Had Belgium militarily conquered the rest of Europe, implausible as that proposition may seem, the result would be precisely as it is today for EU countries.

With the possible exception of Germany, NO country would have ratified the EU had they known it would metastasize into the slimy behemoth it is today.

Europeans should keep records of the EU politicians and EU bureaucrats. That way they can track them down and pay them back after they destroy western society in Europe.
