Embattled Virginia Governor, Ralph Northam (D-VA), referred to people that came to America as slaves from Africa as “indentured servants from Africa” during an interview with CBS News’ Gayle King on Sunday.
Northam sat down with King for his first interview since the Virginian-Pilot published a photo from Northam’s medical school yearbook showing “two men, one in blackface and one in a Ku Klux Klan robe and hood, on the same page as the governor.”
King asked Northam where he would like to begin, pointing out that it had been a difficult week for the people of Virginia.
“Well, it has been a difficult week, and you know if you look at Virginia’s history, we’re now at the 400-year anniversary. Just 90 miles from here in 1619, the first indentured servants from Africa landed on our shores in Ole Point Comfort, what we call now Fort Monroe,” Northam said
“Also known as slavery,” King interjected.

If he said this in a TV interview, it’s likely this is his normal view on slavery.
I'd like to find some way to rub this into those "Holier Than Thou" hippies' faces.
I believe it was also the first to constitutionally abolish the slave trade as well.
Using the past as a yardstick is not a good plan.
Indentured servants of course were a real thing at the time — and not what the slaves were.

Were slaves “made comfortable” before they were “indentured”?
Having vry recenty visited the homes of the Virginia slave holding presidents the word used to describe the condition is enslaved. The black African people forced to live and work on the plantations were enslaved.
The primary focus of these homes is now ensavement rather than the greatness of the founding fathers. Virginia has literally gone to hell

If these were the people he was referring to he would probably be correct.
Perhaps nowadays one should say that America never had slaves.....it had undocumented farmers!

My Irish ancestor from the late 1600s was indentured.
Some were indentured servants, but none were chattel slaves.

In 1655, when England captured Jamaica from Spain, Oliver Cromwell needed to populate their new colony. Some were convicts, many indentured servants and very few of the deportees had committed any great crimes. Deportation “beyond the sea, either within His Majesty’s dominions or elsewhere outside His Majesty’s Dominions” was one of their methods of dealing with the Irish issue and, more importantly, populating England’s new acquisition.
One man whose crime was to harbour a priest was imprisoned, while his three daughters were sent to Jamaica. In order to prevent the new arrivals forming communities the three girls were sent to different corners of Jamaica. Large numbers of the Irish exiles died from heat and diseases.
It was thought that the Irish would have a better chance of survival if they were introduced to the climate at a young age. Cromwell then sent 2,000 children between the age of 10 and 14 years.
Migration to Jamaica continued through the 17th century. The term Redleg was coined. The fair skin of the Irish frazzled beneath the Caribbean sun. The Irish exiles were not chattel slaves. Their white skin meant they would know freedom when their indenturship expired.

If those Africans didn’t want to be indentured then they shouldn’t have signed contracts to buy the false teeth in the first place.

According to Coonman’s father the Honorable Wescott Brownlee Northam, James was the father of his grandfather Levi Jacob Northam, who is also listed on the 1860 census with a few slaves of his own. ;-)
and the other Northams? The Northams of Accomack County are indeed, all very closely related. Except nowadays, of course, the black Northams who were the “indentured servants”, later freed from their “indentured” service to the Northam family because of the Civil War against Virginia, were not likely blood related, but DNA tests might tell a different story.
