Republican state senator in Virginia challenges report he edited yearbook with blackface picture

The slew of scandals rocking Virginia state government expanded to the Republican Party on Thursday as a local newspaper confirmed that State Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment was one of the editors of a 1968 Virginia Military Institute (VMI) yearbook that contained numerous racial slurs and at least one blackface picture.

In response, Norment, 72, suggested he was the victim of a smear campaign intended to distract from the multiple allegations of past racism and sexual assault surrounding the state's highest-ranking Democratic officials.

The Virginian-Pilot reported first reported that Norment was the managing editor of The Bomb, which included a photo of a man in blackface standing with others in costumes and used racial slurs to describe a student from Thailand.

A caption under one photograph read, "He was known as the 'Barracks Jew’ having his fingers in the finances of the entire Corps."

It’s time to ban yearbooks. Those things are dangerous.

Good grief. My high school’s yearbooks from the 70s and 80s have lots of things that were funny then but would be banned by the PC police today... like putting “Say there!” under a picture of a known gay kid... or a picture of the guy and girl voted class clowns and the guy is holding a water pistol to the girl’s head.

So the guy is not even accused of appearing in blackface? Just being on the yearbook staff and somehow failing to censor such a picture? Back in 1968, not even the 1980s?

Tell the SJWs to go do something to themselves which is anatomically impossible.

But did he ever dress up in KKK robes, put on blackface or claim to be an Indian to get a job?

1968?

By today's standards, all the good comedy and classic movies would be impossible.

It's a humorless, soulless world today. I'm glad I'm checking out now, not getting born into it.

Problem with your link. It says Fox but the URL isn’t Fox and it doesn’t link anywhere.

In 1968 I dressed up like an old lady for Halloween. No future in politics for me, I guess.

Can’t win. We’re all be found to be only three degrees away from Simon Legree. Are we ready for the Aggravation River to overflow its banks? Where is HL Mencken when we need him?

“It’s time to ban yearbooks. Those things are dangerous.”

One of the funniest college yearbooks of all time was the 1933 Montana State College (now University) yearbook:

“[R]ebellion animated the production of the 1933 yearbook, the MONTANAN. Dave Rivenes, editor of the yearbook that year, decided to stand up against the conformity-minded administration of the time. The yearbook poked fun at the faculty, the administration, and fellow students. While not popular in the office of the MSC president, the 1933 yearbook won a national award for being the best such student publication that year.”

The photo of the basketball team, with a caption of the players names, right to left, was five Butterfinger candy bars.

A link to a bit about Clarence Mjork (a made-up student that began to appear in almost every photo about 25% of the way through the book):

One for sale for $695.00:
