Historians irked by musical 'Hamilton' escalate their duel
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | February 4, 2019 | Mark Kennedy

Dr. Lyra D. Monteiro's criticism jumps from the page to the stage when she notes that three minority actors play white, slave-owning current or future presidents — obscuring "the white supremacist origins of our country."

Those darn white supremacists who sacrificed wealth and even life to create our nation.

Well, Lin Manuel Miranda insisted on hiring minorities to play all the parts. They should go bitch at him.

Furthermore, historians disagreed on whether the Founding Fathers actually “rapped” all of their dialog.

The Founding Fathers would have slaughtered the entire cast for such an insult.

"It's a musical about the mythology of the ruling class — that anybody can join it," said the Rutgers professor, noting that both Hillary Clinton and Dick Cheney are fans. "It's the myth that the ruling class of the United States wants to believe."

Gee. As neither Hillary Clinton or Dick Cheney were born into the "ruling class", why would they believe that?..

This is deplorable identity cultural Marxism.

A friend of mine and I both love musicals. He thought “Hamilton” was wonderful. My reaction: “But you don’t even like rap...and I despise it!”

“It’s not all rap, and the lyrics are brilliant!”

After much arguing thoughtful discussion, he managed to drag me to see it. And...some of it was decent. I actually liked a couple of songs (the ones by King George and Thomas Jefferson). On the other hand, the rap portions were like fingernails on chalkboard.

As for the “brilliant” lyrics: they were, on occasion, clever. Not exactly Cole Porter or Tim Rice, mind you.

I do find the idea of it being attacked as right-wing propaganda hilarious.

obscuring "the white supremacist origins of our country."

Do you mean the origins that helped propel this country into the greatest nation the world has ever known?

Many conditions of many of the founders were conditions they were born into, and yes in their personal lives accepted many of them

But it is a lie to say they had no reservations at all about them, or to ignore that for some in the end they rejected them.

While it is wrong to simplify historical figures by airbrushing away their warts, it is also wrong to lift up the warts as the only primary consideration we should have of them.

Very few great historical figures (by what they accomplished) were saints. Regardless, we should not deny the particular achievements of theirs that do deserve our thanks or our applause.

Hamilton was, O.K., no saint. But he accomplished quite a bit.
