At this point in Virginia... I would think that a politically neutered Northam would be better than a politically-charged Justin Fairfax.
So I am on the keep Northam side of the issue, because he is politically neutered and that is exactly what Virginia needs right now.
He gas a huge and profitable choice.
If he remains he becomes a lighning rod who draws part of the party as the Democrats fracture into multiple parties.
Staying and standing firm will draw those who do not desire to turn as hard left as Soris’s well telegraphed Ocasio-Cortez move lurches.
He can become an actual power in politics.

You’re absolutely correct.
Unfortunately, it appears that the VA GOP and the Right to Life folks are going to “cut off their proverbial noses to spite their faces.” Fairfax is even more radical than Northam w/an Ivy League degree and past ties to everyone from John Kerry to the Clintons. If Northam resigns or is removed, Fairfax will have the “skids greased” to serve 7-years as VA’s governor ...a feat that would normally be impossible due to our single term limit for that office!
Despite the WaPo cover story that some disgruntled former classmate of Northam’s leaked the “blackface” photo to bigleaguepolitics.com, my suspicion is that the original “leak” came from Fairfax’s camp and is a power play to allow “plausible deniability” while simultaneously providing an avenue for Fairfax’s national political ambitions.
The GOP and Conservatives can be some of the most stupid people alive.

His governorship should be aborted.

The GOP should simply treat Northam as a powerless governor who has no credibility. And use his yearbook photo in every political campaign for the next 500 years.
He’s the one in the KKK outfit. No facial recognition there.
He refused twice to shake his black opponent’s hand... RECENTLY.
He's probably going to be even worse than Northam.
If its not him, theres no reason to consider resigning.

Such "polite" rhetoric ignores that white is a color too. When's the last time, for example, a local Chevy dealer said, "As far as color, we have white cars and we have cars of color"? Looks like the patriarchy wins again.
If I have to use a ‘descriptive’ term, I still use Black as I refuse to use ‘African American’.
BTW....I would imagine most Black people in America would REFUSE to use the term African-American if they really knew how ‘pure’ Africans look down upon them and have virtually no use for American Blacks especially light-skinned ones.
Much the same as how many of us of Irish descent would know how they REALLY feel about us Americans of Irish ancestry in the ‘Auld Sod’.
Like when the money ‘runs out’ one is just another ‘Yank’ with an Irish surname.
