Virtue-signaling Super Bowl commercials: The good, the bad, and the ugly

As the nation’s highest-rated television program, the Super Bowl offers advertisers the opportunity to define (or re-define) themselves for the public in a way that no other venue can provide. A memorable commercial will be discussed among friends at Super Bowl parties today, and at the office water cooler tomorrow. That’s why companies are willing to pay $5 million for half a minute.

Many companies take the opportunity to associate themselves with themes and values cherished by current and potential customers. The label “virtue-signaling” is usually used by me in a negative fashion when companies and people embrace the shibboleths of progressives, but there are many instances of companies espousing positive values that don’t offend me. I remain cynical about the motives, but uncomplaining about the values themselves.

So, apparently the hip-hop knee bending half time show featuring a(lice)dam levin and moron5 plus the PC ads being presented means as a "hole" it won't be that entertaining.

AFC=Anybody F'n Care

NFC=Nobody F'n Cares

Wish I didn’t have to work the next morning. I’d just DVR the game and watch it later, zipping past the commercials.

I suppose the most insane part is that the Super Bowl was once unique (not in a good way) for its interminable 3.5 min ad breaks. Somewhere along the way breaks of that duration became the norm for regular season games also

Watching it live is an exercise in ADD. I wish more people would drive the NFL and broadcasters mad by using their DVRs. As a bonus those people would get 4-8 hrs of their precious weekend back and wouldn’t have to miss a play - but would miss the barrage of sales pitches.

Many FReepers will be angry at me now as I tell you
I did NOT forgive the NFL for the Colin stuff, the taking a knee stuff or the anti-Trump stuff.

To me the total boycott of the NFL is still on.

Yes you believe this is a “free country” and you can go back to supporting the NFL as a free person. I am self-righteous and judgmental of good people here. True.

Drifting away from the boycott and sort of shrugging and compromising and then watching or going to games of the NFL again is wrong.

The NFL,Nike,Gillette and the Dem Party will enjoy laughing at all of you.

We might as well get ready to stand to watch Ocasio at her Inauguration ceremony in a few years. We will not be allowed to take a knee or remain seated, by the way. Works only one way.

Great post rktman.

Most commercials today are so idiotically treacly and sentimental, no matter WHAT they are selling, probiotic, toothpaste, whatever, that they have become repulsive to me. There is a thread today about a Jeep commercial that “will make you cry” I passed.

I’m with you all the way. No football since the very first time the Colon knelt and the NFL supported his disrespect.

I’ve noticed in commercials today that the smartest person in them is usually a young woman——of any color.

Drives me NUTS——and I’m a woman.

NFL games on TV are mostly a barrage of irritatingly borish commentary and a boatload of ads intersperced with a few moments of actual play here and there.

The fact that many viewers anxiously await the endless barrage of ads is a sad commentary on our society.

It won’t be an inauguration. It will be a coronation.

I’ll go even further and say that any person who still follows the NFL is an idiot and any man who still follows the NFL is a soy-boy.

I switched to the NHL where they still respect the flags of Canada and the US and honor the a veteran at every game.
