GM Will Begin Massive Layoffs. Here's How Many Jobs Are Being Axed.

General Motors plans to lay off 4,000 salaried works beginning Monday, CNN reported. This is part of the company's previously announced 15 percent workforce reduction that was announced back in November. Along with letting workers go, GM is also closing four manufacturing plants in the United States and another in Canada.

The company made the decision as part of a strategic move to free up $6 billion annually. That money will then be used to invest in new technology, including electric and self-driving cars as well as a ride sharing service. By making these cuts, GM believes they can save $2.5 billion in 2019 and a total of $6 billion by next year.

When GM CEO Mary Barra made the announcement, she met with legislators on Capitol Hill about why her company planned to close four American plants. At the time, legislators from those states were upset with the decision.

"Reminds me of a race to the moon but this commands and inspires the innovation agenda to create jobs and lead industrial global economy," Rep. Haley Stevens (D) said during the meetings. "At same time, unions need bigger seat at table and we need a plan to address painful job loss."

GM hasn't said exactly when the other 2,000 salaried and contract jobs will be cut, although it will happen sometime this month.

"We are not confirming timing," General Motors told The Detroit News in a statement. "Our employees are our priority, and we will communicate with them first."

Automotive industry outlets, including Automotive News, has referred to Monday's layoff plan as "Black Monday," which are expected to begin at 7:30 a.m. and continue throughout the day.

"Our employees are our priority, and we will communicate with them first."

The arrogance of this lie is breathtaking! Government Motors, the gift that keeps on giving...to Red China.

Most long established car companies will be selling electric cars simply to meet their gov’t mandated fleet fuel economy goals. If not for that they would leave the electric car market entirely to Tesla.

More social engineering courtesy of the federal government. Can’t have businesses free to chose their own goals.

When Barra took over as chief executive of General Motors in January 2014, she became the first ever female to head an automobile manufacturer.[14] During her first year as CEO, General Motors was forced to issue 84 safety recalls involving over 30 million cars.[15] Barra was called before the Senate to testify about the recalls and deaths attributed to the faulty ignition switch.[16] Barra and General Motors also came under suspicion of paying for awards to burnish the CEO and corporation's image during that time.[17] The recalls led to the creation of new policies encouraging workers to report problems they encounter, thereby altering the company culture.[18] Over the course of her tenure as CEO, Barra has pushed GM as a company transitioning into the tech space pushing forward in the automated driverless car space with major acquisitions including Strobe, a startup focused on driverless technology.[19] Also in 2017 she pushed GM to develop the Chevy Bolt EV, beating rival Tesla in developing the first electric car priced under $40K with a range of 200 miles.[20] In 2017 Barra was the highest paid Detroit Three executive, with a total remuneration of $21.96 million.[1] In November 2018 Barra announced the closure of five North American plants and plans to lay of 14,000 workers.[21] Her decision was criticised by President Trump who threatened to removed the company's government subsidies in response.[21]

84 safety recalls??? Why is she even in a job? Like Carly Fiorina at HP, running that into the ground! Hey Look at me! I have boobs and a vagina and no other qualifications to run a company!

Pig faced looking friend of the obamas, Mary Barra, is purposely running the company into the ground to make Trump look bad and get union voters to dump Trump.

You mean GM is dead? Biden was wrong? Great for 2020 if GM is really dead. No fault of anyone.

GM should have failed when it failed. Not propped up by us taxpayers. And I’ve never owned anything but GM cars in my life. My lastGM purchase was a 98 4x4 pickup. Which is still doing okay.

My next car/truck will NOT be a GM product.

GM will, forevermore, be known as: “Government Motors” as far as I’m concerned.

Gm was toast as soon as they bowed to Obama. Soon they will be looking for another Federal bailout.

Same here. Got an ‘04 Silverado Z-71 and a ‘10 HHR(the wife LOVES it-I merely tolerate it) but as I’m older I don’t need to haul so much heavy stuff so that new Honda Ridgeline pickup should do me well until the nursing home, God willing! Those smaller ‘Yota’s are nice too but they sit too low in the cab for my spine.

Mary Teresa Barra is the Chairwoman and CEO of General Motors Company. She has held the CEO position since January 15, 2014, and she is the first female CEO of a major global automaker

This is BS. There is no way GM was that overstaffed and no way they have replaced all these people with new automation. Most all of this work is being moved offshore and they just don’t want to announce that.

Bought an ‘04 Malibu. Fine car. Drove it 9 years, but in ‘11 bought a Sonata because I wouldn’t buy Govt Motors. In ‘16 a Hyundai Tuscon. The Hyundais have been quite a bit better than okay. I watch the new Chevy ads and am not tempted. And I really don’t like the bearded millenial ,wearing his sister’s skinny jeans who is the center of the ads.

Electric cars now that gas in plentiful and getting less expensive.

It's not just about electric cars. Though that's a major reason.

The other major reason is self-driving vehicles.

I've been saying it for years that, automakers would be putting themselves out of business, and now, they'e facing the reality.

I also said that, with self-driving vehicles, there would be no need for anyone to own a car. If car ownership dwindles or disappears completely, then, there would be a huge need for vehicle fleets which could be summoned at the touch of a button or by voice request. That's about to become fact, SOON!. So, with the automakers not being needed for sales of vehicles, thereby putting all car dealerships out of business, and only fleet owners would be buying them for sales of rides. But, sales to fleet operators would still leave the automakers close to dying, so, their only hope would be to become the fleet operators themselves. Hence, no auto dealers, and no independent fleet operators. The automakers would be building their own fleets of vehicles. Those vehicles would then become what the consumer would use to get around

The consumers would actually end up ahead, with no need to own and maintain and fuel up their vehicles. That could, potentially, save consumers some $10,000 per year.

And then, roads wouldn't need to be serviced as often as they are now, police/sheriff's department wouldn't need to be trained to chase violators, since there wouldn't be any. Parking lots would disappear. No need to build garages for homes or for shopping centers. No need for parking garages at airports.

Fuel costs would dramatically dive. No repair shops. No parking meters. No police radar traps. No red-light cameras. No gasoline stations.

20-30 million jobs lost in the U.S. alone; hundreds of millions lost around the world. The oil industry would collapse, just because of the lower fuel demands of those ICE cars still on the road; ICE cars will still be built and sold to fleet operators.

Most union jobs would disappear, starting with all of those at automakers.

Eventually, even traffic lights would disappear, to be replaced by 'smart' signals to the self-driving vehicles.

A lot more benefits to come, but also a lot of detrimental repercussions.

Hey, liberals. Welcome to the world you forced on us. Nothing is without consequences.

Precisely my question, my good FRiend.

And, as a slight aside, why isn't the UAW (and all US labor unions) working for American workers, and FOR the WALL?

As a free enterprise capitalist, I believe a company should be able to do what increases its bottom line for private or corporations.

However, I see this as obscene. "The company made the decision as part of a strategic move to free up $6 billion annually. That money will then be used to invest in new technology, including electric and self-driving cars as well as a ride sharing service."

Unions aside which I don't like, you have to ask how much is 4,000 employees costing them per year? Answer: No where near 6 billion and year.

This is the same company our tax dollars bailed out in the recession, IIRC. They will fire some 4,000 employees so they can continue to experiment with electric cars (their Volt failed) and "self-driving" cars that will take years to perfect and years for consumers to trust.

They also want to be the next Uber with a "ride sharing service"? If GM has enough 6 billion reserves to "free up annually", this is all kinds of wrong for their employees.

SCREW GM, I will never buy their product again if they follow through with this plan. I'm astounded that the Board of Directors thinks this good. They will lose more money in bad PR than they hope to "free up billions".

As a small business owner of 3 companies, I don't get GM's strategic position.
