Again, my comment was specifically regarding your tunneling statement. Which is not where the epic conga-line of illegals are coming from.
What do you know about the “extra” equipment like the electronic dogs to be used at ports of entry to detect drugs in containers? I’m hoping that NANan insists all her funding goes for updated detection, manpower etc. I do believe that POTUS will find a way to “fund the wall!” Without her help!

If he gets $5 billion this year, and another $5 next year, it would do the main part of the job. Really transform the situation.
We’ll be chasing diminishing marginal returns on every mile after that, because they are prioritizing the most important miles first.

Crime rates go down and property values go up, local Government saves money.
It is a huge benefit to local communities - and if they miss this chance, they might not get another. There are many who really want the wall, but say they don’t, just for the politics of it.
It will be interesting to watch Rep Henry Cuellar, (Dem) Laredo, who is sitting on the special committee to negotiate a border deal.
Laredo is the biggest city on the border without significant barrier. President Trump wants to give them 55 miles, which would totally protect the city - and provide FEMA certified hurricane rated flood control levee as well. It is about the best piece of pork the Congressman could deliver.
Across the river, Nuevo Laredo is run by the hyper-violent Zetas, who recruit their gunmen from the Mexican Special Forces, and rival ISIS for some of the violent atrocities they commit.
If Congressman Cuellar really cares for the people of Laredo, he will work hard to find a way for them to get their barrier.
Look up Austin Indiana and our drug problem. It’s less the ten miles from home - (on the southern side of the river). Home of canning factory which hired temp help for years from the other south side of river.
Oh and the county has only democrat office holders.

There is a serious bipartisan interest in upgrading technology at the Ports of Entry. No one is against it.
Sen Cornyn (R), Texas sponsored a study to lay out a program, and the President recently signed it into law. It seems likely that the recommendations will be accepted and funded in the 2020 budget.
The first year of the Trump Administration, they did a study on how to gain full operational control of the border. The results were delivered to Congress in March of 2018, and recommended a five year, $25 billion dollar effort; which would fund more people, new and expanded technology projects, and 1,100 miles of barrier.
Very little attention has been paid to technology projects, but they seem to be progressing apace. Some have already deployed.
The Port of Entry Technology effort seems to be something that came to light during the border control study, but did not get into the recommendations for whatever reason (too late, out of scope). The strength of the argument seems to have been so great (possibly threats they know about, or available capability that is just so effective, or maybe it just suits both sides politically), that upgrading the Ports of Entry now seems to be on a fast track, without opposition.

Probably a good idea to keep the method of technology under caps. Once the methods are out the cartels will adjust their methods.

It’s not just the people living along the borders that are hurt by the open border and people KNOW that. Our EMS i(n the adjoining County) quadrupled for overdose runs in the past year. Mid America has had enough!
The Chicago - Louisville drug gangs run along the interstate and all small towns are vulnerable . I’ve spotted more than one vehicle in our remote state forest on way to town. (Sheriff picked em up)
Also. When Kentucky outlawed the pain clinics, they were moved across the river to areas where the doctors were making referrals.

The notable ones are 36th EN BDE and 89th MP BDE, both of whom are headquartered at Fort Hood. Some here have mentioned III Corps Engineers. That’s basically 36th EN BDE. A lot has changed with Engineers since some guys here on the forum have been in. The big Engineer brigades of the past have been split up a lot and pushed down into “Brigade Engineer Battalions” as part of Brigade Combat Teams. Every BCT now has 2 Engineer companies as part of a BEB. Idea is to make more Engineer assets organic to BCTs, rather than having it be a Corps or Division asset that has to get sliced and diced. Move decisions down to the lower level.
Also keep in mind the civilian component to the Army Corps of Engineers. I imagine they’re bringing in heavy machinery of their own, plus they’re authorized to hire private contractors for specialty jobs.

My son has been working down there doing construction inspection since late October.
Lots of concrete being poured.
Next BIG move-—start taxing remittances going south at 50% instead of only 5%.
Use ALL of that $$$$$$$ to build the WALL.

I have ridden horseback close enough to the border to SEE it. Westbound from El Paso. Horseback at 7 mph sure is slow enough to see what I am talking about. That was over 30 years ago, and things have ONLY GOTTEN WORSE.
The areas near cities are what you are seeing on TV. The areas along the rest of the border are remote-—ask ranchers down there. Especially the ones who NOW CARRY each & EVERY DAY. Even the women on the ranches are carrying. Too many surprise intruders.
Drones could help finding tunnels.

I have no idea what it was like 30 years ago, but all you need to do is watch the video - that was a busy street.
Anyway, my question already got answered: there will be another wall - almost twice as high - deeper into US territory, to provide a “no fly zone” and allow for patrolling. Anyone spotted in this buffer zone would definitely be out of place - and trespassing to boot. Plus, thanks to the primary wall, they would not have any heavy equipment at their disposal.
