For many obstetricians – including me – the whole political debate and legislative push for legalized abortion after 24 weeks, and in some cases well into the third trimester, is not only disturbing but very sad.

Over many years in my field of maternal-fetal medicine, I have encountered situations when parents ask about an abortion – but for a lot of parents, termination after 24 weeks has never been the norm. Neonatologists, who are pediatricians who treat very premature babies, devote themselves to the survival of these small infants.

Viability for infants as early as 23 weeks has improved over the years. There are indeed clinical conditions under which either for maternal causes or fetal conditions a premature delivery is indicated.

But the political agenda to include elective termination of pregnancy into the third trimester may lead to putting patients in harm’s way.

Many of these politicians advocating for these late-term abortion are not thinking about the consequences of their actions, and my comments have nothing to do with my personal views on abortion. To legislate clinical indications for elective abortion into the third trimester is really political malpractice.

Oh, the politicians are thinking about the consequences of their actions. They are guaranteeing their next election since there are plenty of Josef Mengele type voters supported by many, many useful idiots. That is why the NY Senate cheered when the infanticide bill passed.

Who benefits? Certainly not the patients or doctors. However, politicians benefit because they are seen as the guardian of the quality in health care in people’s lives.

I worked in a hospital's Pathology Department...before Roe vs Wade.I once saw a container full of stillborn children.They were the size of my thumb and were perfectly formed.So perfectly formed that they couldn't possibly be mistaken for anything but tiny human beings.

The child that I could see most clearly needed his/her fingernails clipped.

If a woman decides on an abortion the day before she would deliver the child, it can be ripped apart and removed from her body.

If a person is shot a few minutes before they would naturally die, the shooter can still be arrested for murder. If you dismember the body of the deceased you can be charged with “Abuse of a corpse”.

So why can’t the abortionist be arrested for “abuse of a corpse?”

Make no mistake about it, this has been mooted in academia complete with a well developed philosophy. And it is within the range of acceptable ruling class opinion, as the man is a department head at Princeton.

Having done a Residency in Neurosurgery I know what Northam (ineloquently) was talking about from my 12 month experience in two of our nation’s busiest Pediatric Hospitals. However, if Northam is so stupid to say what he said to an audience with an average 8th grade comprehension he deserves all his troubles.

The problem people like Northam and SInger run into is this. Northam was pretty clearly referring to “anencephaly” and saying a woman should be able to abort an anencephalic child right up to or even in the “Fourth Trimester”. The problem is, one need not abort these children as they aren’t viable in the first place. In my day there was only one case in the literature of an anencephalic child lasting over 48 hours. Which is why you “make the child comfortable and explain things to the parents”. Now with so many Ultrasounds done on every baby no one is surprised by anencephaly at birth. No one has objected to prematurely inducing birth of anencephalic children that I have ever heard of. It is pretty hard to make the case that a fetus with no brain is “human”.
