Austin wedding business feeling impact of government shutdown

A small wedding business in Austin is taking a huge blow due to the government shutdown. Lorelei Starbuck, owner of "Elope in Austin" says federal employees trying to get married through her company have had to back out because of the lack of money. Starbuck says her business has seen a 50-percent drop in calls and inquiries in the last two weeks. The slow bookings have impacted everyone that takes a part in the wedding including caterers, officiants, photographers, and florists. “It's going to take some time to rebuild the business we've lost. But it will definitely impact our bottom line,” Starbuck said. She hopes the shutdown is resolved quickly and said she won't forget about the impact when the 2020 election rolls around.

The wedding planners didn’t pay at least a down payment of half to hold the event. How many exactly backed out of wedding plans? They should do what others do when laid off before the wedding. Horse hockey pucks.

It’s hard to believe that federal employees are such a big customer base for a wedding vendor.

Ms. Starbuck may want to go to Starbucks, and get her coffee, and talk this through with her friends.............

I call BS. She asks employer info on the initial inquiry? More than likely, her business sucks.

Got laid off twice in my life.

But I had a license.

So I drove 70 plus hours a week in a livery until I found a job in my sector again.

Federal workers fold like b.tches because they miss a check or two.

It hasn’t been a YEAR!! It’s been a month!

This is a joke. Name some names and lets see what their positions were and how much money they were being paid.

Now that the shut down is over and all 800,000 federal workers can return to work and will get FULL back pay shortly that's great for them. Now for the taxpayers I want to know when we are going to get the 35 days of work from 800,000 people that we paid for? When do we get those 35 days of productivity? I propose each worker must schedule them how ever they like as long as they work at least 30 days by the end of the year without pay. I would accept 30 days to cover any interest or late fee payments the workers have incurred when they did not receive their paychecks on time. That seems fair as this would never happen in the private sector who has to pay these bills. When your work is cut in the private sector you simply don't get paid and you can stick around to see if the job comes back or seek employment elsewhere. Why should it be any different for federal employees that we pay for?

Second we the taxpayers need to see the total amount of money be issued as back pay. We are trying to fund constructions of a border wall. I bet there are some contractors that if given a crew of 800,000 workers paid for 35 days could build a hell of a lot of border wall.

Just some quick math lets say the average wage was 40K per year. Just paying one month of back pay for 800,000 workers is over 2.6 billion !

Oh and to be clear I know there were federal workers that actually had to work and still not get paid. Some TSA workers and such were in that situation. Obviously they are entitled to full back pay and maybe even a little stipend to cover the expenses and such incurred when they were working and not getting paid. It's to my understanding however that of the 800,000 not many actually had to work without pay. Most were just sent home and were still accruing full pay and benefits.

Close enough! :)

ZEROS definitely.

There’s Zoo but tying that into bestiality is a tough one.

Zebra screwers? Nah, no good.

I’m stumped :)

Boo frickin’ hoo. Can you imagine our Founding Fathers whining about that when they were trying to give us a country? Most of them sacrificed their fortunes for us. And these people might not have a good profit at their WEDDING BUSINESS? Seriously?!?

It’s hard to believe that federal employees are such a big customer base for a wedding vendor.

It's hard to believe that a wedding vendor in Texas has half her business from Fedworker weddings.

Half her business from Feds in the 25% of FedGov that's affected. I mean come on, the 75% of government that's been open the whole time doesn't use her?
