How trafficking in Indigenous communities has been ignored under Trump

Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women have been a problem in Native American communities for years and I venture to guess if these women are disappearing and being murdered in Native American communities they likely aren't being murdered by white men.

This didn't start with Trump and Obama certainly didn't consider it a priority.

At the March for Women there was also the March for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.

Because of the Nathan Phillips incident, it got little coverage.

The Nathan Phillips incident was a distraction.

Maybe that was the purpose.

If Indians are trafficking fellow Indians wouldn’t this be considered part of their culture? Should whiteys interfere in their culture?

It seems like it would be similar to the Muslims in the US marrying little girls and Muslim women sending their daughters for sexual mutilation.

There are existing state and federal laws on trafficking and I see nothing in the article to warrant blaming the present administration other than a complaint some funding of studies is delayed. Laws and judicial punishments are in place so why is it said Native American females are not being protected? State cops and the FBI are available, why is it said they aren’t helping?

The mish-mash of Federal, State, Tribal, and local jurisdictions in that area is a complication for law enforcement and prosecutors. It’s hard to see how a study would help anyone but the recipients of the grant money.

Even President Trump did have information about human trafficking or abuse of Native American women, what is he to do about it? Make this against the law? It already is, at several levels of jurisdiction.

One gets the impression that millions of Americans believe Donald Trump is a wizard. They disagree on whether he’s a bad wizard or a good wizard, but they’re all positive that he’s a wizard.

Advocates say this move would have provided a pivotal first step in addressing the issue by conducting a national needs assessment. However, in early 2017, in the midst of the Trump administration transition, the study was killed. The National Institute of Justice cited “administration issues” for the scuttling of the report.

A needs assessment can be conducted by almost any agency, and in the case of tribal lands, should be headed by them. They have funding - look at the casino, hotel and liquor taxes collected. Use that money ...

Blaming the Trump administration for scuttling the report, when no other study or report has even been done since the Bush administration, is disingenuous at best.

I suspect that some swamp denizen used the administration transition to kill off the study and divert the money elsewhere. The DOJ and NIJ have not been helpful to victims and their families for decades now.

Indigenous? They’re not indigenous, they came here from Asia. Only Kennewick Man and his ancestors/descendants could possibly be considered indigenous. But that’s not likely to happen as Kennewick Man is most likely white.

We do no have an indigenous communities human trafficking problem. We have a human trafficking problem. Period. And it runs across all swathes of American society - Whites, Blacks, Hispanics and Indigenous communities. Trump’s administration has had more human trafficking arrests than any other administration. Does anyone really think our federal law enforcement is deliberately not investigating if the victim’s are Native American? I’m not buying it.
