A viral story spread. The mainstream media rushed to keep up. The Trump Internet pounced. (SPIN)

But the Covington story isn’t just a run-of-the-mill incident of viral outrage. It involved MAGA-hat-wearing teens and Native American activists. Those who shared the video in those first 24 hours, including many conservatives, seemed to feel it was emblematic of the vitriol and racism that drives the worst of American culture. But when new details shifted the story into more ambiguous territory, a well-oiled machine of pro-Trump personalities and sites saw an opportunity to strike.

For the students and their defenders, attempts by the media to complicate the narrative of the first viral video came too late. Online vigilantes had identified the teens. Sandmann said he had received “physical and death threats via social media, as well as hateful insults."

Now, a new viral outrage emerged. This time the villain of the story was the news media.

That outrage came from a parallel universe online, one that has been waiting for a moment like this. The pro-Trump Internet has, for years, worked to create a media environment that is designed to destroy the traditional news media and replace it.

The Covington story is the sort of thing the pro-Trump Internet . . . is made for. As videos emerged, showing Phillips slowly approach the teens during an altercation with a third group nearby, they went to work.

According to the pro-Trump media, the Covington teens were blameless, the only victims who mattered.

The liberal backlash against the teens, and who had apologized, and who hadn’t, and whether those apologies were sincere enough, became a breaking news story on the pro-Trump Internet.

Eventually the president weighed in, tweeting . . . “the students of Covington have become symbols of Fake News and how evil it can be.”

The Spin:

The media isn't to blame for getting the story wrong - oh, no, no, no.

This isn't about the media's willingness to demonize a group of teenagers because of MAGA hats. Oh, no, no.

The fault lies with the "pro-Trump internet" that "has, for years, worked to create a media environment . . ." It's all part of a right-wing plan to destroy the media and replace it.

The pinkos who run the so-called “news” media are the victims. Wow.

“Those who shared the video in those first 24 hours, including many conservatives, seemed to feel it was emblematic of the vitriol and racism that drives the worst of American culture.”

WTF are they talking about? The whole thing is complete nonsense. It really has nothing to do with Trump per se. Leftists are completely consumed with hate, rage, and jealousy. I like how they tried to include “conservatives” in this dumpster fire.

Anyone who threw those kids under the bus is no conservative. Paycheck republicans. Frauds.

People see right through their nonsense.

The media could not be doing a better job of shooting itself in the foot if it actually was trying to do so.

So the “pro-Trump Internet” surrounded the poor oppressed media in a menacing fashion and smirked?

So, the media rush to get the story out there without checking to see if it’s true, the facts show their version of events was completely wrong, and we’re bad people for noticing.

Destroying the lame stream media? Ok I’ll bite, what’s the downside? Is the this more of the vast right wing conspiracy? Geez, this story is BS.

It ain’t the “Trump Internet” they gotta worry about.

It’s law enforcement and the criminal charges coming down the pike against media figures, as well as libel lawsuits numerous and potent enough to put all the major corporate media organizations out of business.

They have NO idea what can of worms they opened here. This will reverberate for decades.

If a lie doesn’t succeed, cover it up with another lie. They won’t stop lying because they don’t dare tell the truth.

If journalists had done their job, this wouldn’t have exploded in their faces. It’s that simple.

It’s hard proof that that today’s corporate reporters don’t actually do any of the legwork they pretend they do.

To paraphrase a good question:

ARE THERE NO HONEST PEOPLE IN THE MAIN STREAM MEDIS??

Hope springs eternal in the human breast...

The smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself – anything that carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide. In any case, to wear an improper expression on your face (to look incredulous when a victory was announced, for example) was itself a punishable offense. There was even a word for it in Newspeak: facecrime, it was called. - George Orwell - 1984

How would the slugs at the Washington Post have covered this if the teenagers waiting for a bus had been black and verbally attack for wearing 'Hope and Change' tee shirts?

And if the 'indian' had been a white southerner beating a drum in their faces while a crew behind him yelled every disgusting thing they could think of to anger black teenagers... and I mean 'everything'...

Yeah the slugs at the Washington Post would have condemned the black kids, right? /s

Yeah, nobody “pounced” on these kids, right? Only Conservatives pounce. And the Liberal media/DNC/celebrity twitter cabal isn’t a well oiled machine....just the Trump media is.

Makes me think of when I was a kid, and kids would say “I know you are, but what am I?”
