U.N.C. Admissions Lawsuit Brings Another Attack on Affirmative Action
New York Times ^ | January 18, 2019 | Anemona Hartocollis

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill weighs race so heavily in its admissions process that it is the predominant factor in determining whether many black and Hispanic students get in, according to court papers filed on Friday by an anti-affirmative action group that is also suing Harvard.

The group, Students for Fair Admissions, says the university is excluding white and Asian applicants in favor of less qualified black and Hispanic students.

The plaintiffs accuse U.N.C., a public flagship university, of using race “at every stage” of the admissions process, in violation of the law, “even when the application gives no indication that race affected the student’s life in any way.”

“This is wrong,” the university said in a brief in its defense, also filed Friday. An applicant’s race does not provide an automatic boost or guarantee admission, the university said. Rather, “This factor, like all others, is always considered in the context of everything else known about a candidate and in light of the range of contributions the candidate might make to the University.”

The case has many similarities to a deeply divisive lawsuit that Students for Fair Admissions brought against Harvard, leading to a hard-fought trial last fall and a national conversation over the role of race in college admissions.

But unlike the Harvard case, which focused on whether the university was particularly unfair to one minority group, Asian-Americans, the U.N.C. case is more akin to high-profile affirmative action suits of the past, which accused schools of favoring black and Hispanic students over others.

The cases are also somewhat different in legal approaches. The plaintiffs accuse Harvard of violating federal civil rights law, and U.N.C. of violating civil rights law and the Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause.

“The range of contributions a candidate might make to the university” is Libtard-speak for “political/social usefulness to virtue signalling campus administrators and faculty.”

My overall question, never really answered, is how much longer are we going to see affirmative action?

The major civil rights laws of the ‘60s were passed over 50 years ago. A few generations have grown up after the end of Jim Crow and the rampant discrimination of the past.

Many young people applying to college today were born in 1999 or 2000 or 2001. Their entire lives have been lived in a time of equal rights under the law.

Is a minority student who grew up in the 2000s and 2010s, really hampered because there were segregated schools in the South 60 years ago?

To sum up, at what point can we say, we have done all we can in the area of affirmative action, and from now on, we will judge everyone equally????

All schools and businesses should run things the way they do in the NFL and NBA. The best players play. Nothing unfair about that!

The solution is simple, use the liberals own words against them.

Identify as a crippled black lesbian trans. Instant admission.

It’s a serious statement. The liberals say you can be whatever you want to be. Suddenly they need proof?

To allow race to have any impact, positive or negative in student selection is racism.

To allow gender to have any impact, positive or negative in student selection is sexism.

All universities are racist and sexist.

It will continue until democrats tell us that women and minorities are no longer inferior to white heterosexual males

But will the liberals, ever, in our lifetimes, ever say that women and minorities are equal to white heterosexual males?

It seems that whenever we note a civil rights anniversary, such as anniversaries of Brown vs. Board of Education, cable news networks assemble panels to discuss. And invariably, the panels conclude that while we have come a long way towards equality, that we still have a long way to go.

So one can get the impression, that these matters will never be resolved, because some will always proclaim that we still have not yet achieved “equality”, based on some criteria they choose to use.

THEIR entire lives have been lived in a time of AFFIRMATIVE ACTION, SPECIAL CONSIDERATION & SPECIAL TREATMENT.

As have THEIR PARENTS. And THEIR GRANDPARENTS lived a significant portion or all of their adult lives under that same era of PREFERENTIAL TREATMENT AND CONSIDERATION.

It’s long overdue for our nation to have TRULY EQUAL RIGHTS AND OPPORTUNITIES—-FOR EVERYONE.

It’s not that simple. Best is not always determined by grades or test scores. You want the highest quality students and ones that are most likely to give back to the school after graduation.

And in UNC's case, the best players get paid.

Another term for racism is “Affirmative Action”. It’s simply racist against whites. White males more than white females but both nonetheless.

AA is illegal, unconstitutional and wrong. Any law that allows it is invalid and not binding.

Judge individuals by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin? I'll bet the thousands of far-left lurkers on this web site are freaking out over such a bigoted statement. That's, in their eyes, yet another dog whistle for racism.

“Affirmative action”, the answer to past discrimination, is reverse discrimination.
