Senate to take up Trump's border-immigration plan next week
The Hill ^ | 01/19/19 | Jordain Carney

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said Saturday that the Senate will take up President Trump's plan to tie more than $5 billion for the border wall to temporary legal protections for some undocumented immigrants next week.

"I intend to move to this legislation this week. With bipartisan cooperation, the Senate can send a bill to the House quickly so that they can take action as well," McConnell said in a statement.

Trump is asking for more than $5 billion for border security in exchange for a three year extension in protections for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients and some Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders.

McConnell said Trump's plan is a "compromise" that includes "priorities from both sides of the aisle."

“This bill takes a bipartisan approach to re-opening the closed portions of the federal government. It pairs the border security investment that our nation needs with additional immigration measures that both Democrat and Republican members of Congress believe are necessary," McConnell said.

McConnell's decision to bring up a government funding bill that includes Trump's border-immigration plan comes after he's repeatedly blocked House-passed bills that would have reopened the quarter of the government closed by the shutdown but did not include additional border wall funding.

McConnell, at the time, argued that he would only bring up a bill that had buy in from both Trump and congressional Democrats.

"The only way out of this impasse is a bipartisan agreement, and as the Democratic leader and I have both stated here on the floor, only an all-corners, bipartisan agreement will receive a vote here in the Senate," McConnell said earlier this week.

But his decision to bring up the president's plan fo a Senate vote marks a backing away from that, with Democrats panning Trump's offer as a "non-starter" before he had publicly pitched it.

Two aides said on Saturday that Democrats were not consulted by the White House on its new plan to end the partial government shutdown, which is currently in its 29th day.

“Democrats were hopeful that the President was finally willing to re-open government and proceed with a much-need discussion to protect the border. ... It is unlikely that any one of these provisions alone would pass the House, and taken together, they are a non-starter,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in a statement released shortly before Trump's address.

So now Trump appears to be reasonable and compromising and the dems will look extremist and partisan.

He’s pretty good at this!

He shouldn’t give them an inch or sign anything until the wall has been completed. They’ll renege if he does.

The Senate passes it, and it goes to the House. Nancy and her coven will want MORE. At that point will he FINALLY sign the EO?

The Dems are already going to claim victory, because they've already got all of these concessions, in spite of offering nothing in return.

Nancy’s digging her own grave here. But then, she thinks she’s equal to the president you know?

Now that President Trump has peed in your rice krispies, your move Nancy...

I wonder who the cartels are paying to prevent building the wall?

He absolutely should. Its a golden opportunity to take the air out of a bloated, biased and wasteful government but he probably won’t do it. Republicans won’t back him. They love big government just as much as the Dems do.

Yep, and think of what comes next.

Mitch has the votes in the Senate, else this would never have been put forth. Suppose the House rejects it. They then reject DACA, TPS extension, the Wall - every damn thing. They may as well pass a resolution supporting open borders, free sex trafficking, open season for drugs, and all the rest.

Trump put them in a box. As he would say “So easy!” This will divide the House Dems and remember they are getting heat from the federal workers who may say they blame Trump for the shutdown but who expect the Dems to fix it.

Yes, he is VERY good at this!

Why would he open the government first? Reagan fell for that ploy years ago and that’s why we are in the mess we are in now.

When the President addressed the newly minted Americans in the Oval Office, it was a great thing.

Too bad he didn’t use that to demonstrate the gross unfairness to the legal immigrants who did it right from the beginning.

The hoops they have to jump through is incredible- money, paperwork, lawyers, wait, wait, wait...

for better or otherwise it is only a matter of time before another illegal alien commits a violent crime inside the US. the next event will make pelosi look very bad and unreasonable imho. all trump has to do is wait for that event whenever it happens.

“Trump put them in a box.’

He sure did! Masterful.

Now I’m wondering if Nancy got wind of the upcoming speech and that’s why she was hightailing it out of town...

Then Trump grounded her...and gave the speech!

He’s got them on the run!

It’s about DAMN TIME we got republican that can FIGHT!

Looks like Pelosi rejected it, thankfully.

Trump should NOT go any further, without demanding more in return. One possibility, if he does want to go further, would be to give them citizenship (but making sure only the ones with clean criminal records are provided this opportunity), in exchange for STRUCTURAL REFORMS, including the end of Anchor Babies and Chain Migration, along with ending this Asylum crap.

If this passes in the Senate and gets to a vote in the House, then no matter what else happens Pelosi and Schumer lose.

Even is the Senate forms the bill and approves the House, under the insane leadership, will not vote for it. They won’t even let the bill come to as vote. Trump will have to go nuke for the wall. And he will have to proclaim that any objection will be treason, including Federal judges.

You are correct.

Consider that we do not know what we do not know. Namely we do not know what hs transpired behind closed doors. We think we know everything about everything but the events of the day lend credence to the fact that we do not.

The game is afoot
