Prince Philip's car crash sparks questions about why the 97-year-old was driving

Queen Elizabeth's husband Prince Philip is said to be doing fine after his SUV flipped in a car crash Thursday near the queen's country estate in eastern England. The 97-year-old was behind the wheel during the collision...

The force of impact shattered the windshield and jolted the prince, who was strapped into the driver's seat. He walked away without serious injuries but witnesses said he was lucky to escape alive.

One witness said Philip was lightly bleeding and appeared "very shocked" but was pulled from the wreck with the help of bystander Roy Warne. "I helped him move his legs which were a little trapped and a bit crushed, then I saw his face and I realized who it was," Warne said.

Two women in a second vehicle were hospitalized with minor injuries and a nine-month-old baby was found uninjured in their backseat. Police are investigating what caused the crash with many people surprised to hear Philip was behind the wheel at his age.

"Prince Philip, as we know, is a very determined headstrong individual who has wanted to retain a sense of individual freedoms right up to the age of 97 and you can understand that," said Royal correspondent Roya Nikka. "This is also a man who served in the navy, who served in the Second World War, a man who has seen action, who has been active his whole life."

But over the years he's had to dial it back, giving up flying planes and playing polo. In 2017, he retired from his royal duties.

The prince is said to be home resting with the queen by his side. While he escaped uninjured, Buckingham Palace isn't taking this lightly. Some say it's unlikely he will be allowed to drive on public roads again.

The Archbishop of York tweeted out this prayer. A reminder that no matter how old, or what station of life we're in, we are always on the cusp of eternity and must make our peace with God.

@JohnSentamu Almighty God, the Fountain of all Goodness,We humbly beseech thee to bless Philip Duke of Edinburgh: Endue him with thy Holy Spirit; enrich him with thy Heavenly Grace; prosper him with all happiness; and bring him to thine everlasting kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

I remember reading about his opposing gun laws and being really criticized by the media for it.

Taking the car keys away from an aging parent is no fun. I’ve had to do it once, with the sequel coming very soon. The cursings and disownings and “you’ll be sorry one day” is just part of life. The Royals needed to step up a long time ago on this.

Same as most other men who are 97———he’s no different.

Time to stop driving. Period.

Prince Philip is still driving at 97 because he thinks that he can still do it. It’s probably time for him to stop, at least on public roads. If he wants to drive a golf cart around the gated Palace Grounds, maybe so, but not in heavy traffic. I suspect that family he hit is going to get a comfortable settlement. I mean money. Pictures of The Queen in her fancy gowns aren’t going to be enough to heal this family.

I am surprised at the apparent absence of security surrounding the Prince. Perhaps there are still certain safe areas of England today, in spite of the ongoing Muslim immigration.

The Daily Mail has a headline TODAY: “Philip Rides Again”

He’s out on the road in a brand new car. Is there no one in his family who will have that conversation?

My mom was driving on the freeways of San Diego at 99. She had some fender benders—when people crashed into her. The last one was in a parking lot when an old lady in a mobility scooter hit her car and then drove off—a hit and run with a mobility scooter.

Anyway, everyone ages differently. Some have to take the keys away from 70-year olds. But you may be right, it might be time to take the keys from Phillip. There’s probably someone around who can take him down to pub.

Since my heart episode in late November I am not supposed to drive, until the doc clears me. I like my independence, not having to beg a ride. If I make 97 I’ll probably feel the same way.

But a prince, who’s had servants and chauffeurs at beck and call all his life, I can’t imagine not saying “Home, James” instead of reaching for the keys.
